An Open Letter to all West Seattle business owners

If you are in favor of equal rights for all – thank you for your support of Referendum 71. To those organizations that do not support equal rights and urged others to vote against them– you have been put on notice.

Many of the anti-equal rights organizations depend on donations and contributions from local West Seattle business owners who are gay/lesbian or who support equal rights. As openly lesbian business owners, we are urging all business owners to pay close attention to which organizations you donate to in the coming year.

We have seen several of our fellow gay/lesbian business owners display thank yous from Holy Rosary for generous contributions. Yet last week, Holy Rosary publicly announced in the West Seattle Herald that they are urging everyone to vote against Referendum 71. Why support a local organization that chooses to deny equal rights?

Think about it – the next time you get asked for a donation or to purchase items like Christmas trees and Holiday wreaths – ask yourself, does this organization support equal rights? Does this organization support you as an equal member of society?

Sincerely,
Elise Lindborg

Open Letter to West Seattle Businesses

The ladies who own Zippy Dogs should think about the law of unintended consequences. Urging West Seattle businesses who supported Ref 71 to boycott Holy Rosary Church's Christmas tree sale and requests for sponsorships/donations for church activities is one of those things that can bite you at the cash register.

I patronize West Seattle businesses on a near daily basis. If I learned that any of them were boycotting Holy Rosary or any other church in our community over political/values issues, that would be the end of my business.

A specific example happened last December when I was browsing in a WS Junction business for Christmas presents. After listening to the two sales ladies talk on and on about their delight in our new president and their joy at being finished with that "idiot, George Bush", I advised them that I didn't appreciate that kind of commentary in a store where I was trying to be a customer and walked out. I haven't been back since, and have found other places to spend my money.

Successful business owners are too savvy to inflict their personal politics on their customers. Perhaps the Zippy Dogs ladies will figure this out.
