US Senator Maria Cantwell releases statement on Amanda Knox case

Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) issued the following statement on Amanda Knox's guilty verdict decided today by an Italian court in Perugia, Italy. Knox, a 22-year-old Seattle native, was accused of murdering her British school roommate Meredith Kercher in November 2007.
Knox stood trial with co-defendant and former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

Senator Cantwell's statement:
"I am saddened by the verdict and I have serious questions about the Italian justice system and whether anti-Americanism tainted this trial. The prosecution did not present enough evidence for an impartial jury to conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that Ms. Knox was guilty.
Italian jurors were not sequestered and were allowed to view highly negative news coverage about Ms. Knox.

Other flaws in the Italian justice system on display in this case included the harsh treatment of Ms. Knox following her arrest; negligent handling of evidence by investigators; and pending charges of misconduct against one of the prosecutors stemming from another murder trial.

I am in contact with the U.S. Ambassador to Italy and have been since the time of Ms. Knox's arrest. I will be conveying my concerns to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. I have also been in touch with the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC.

Amanda Knox

I feel for the families of all involved and hope they find peace somehow in all of this.

I wonder if any of the convicted thought of what type of Justice system they were living under while going to school in Italy. Did the parents of these young adults provide any consideration to their children. I think it is difficult to find fault with the Italians and their judicial system regardless of the flaws people speak about, as it is the responsibility of those who visit Italy, American or not, to have an understanding of the standards and styles of the system.

Let us not forget the canning in Singapore of a young American student vandal, or forget how harsh of a sentence these convicted "killers" would have faced in a middle eastern country.

Amanda Knox

I agree wholeheartedly with the above comment.

It's more than a bit hypocritical for an American politician to criticise the justice system and press of another country.

Meredith Kercher — The Real Victim

Standing before the Italian court, delivering her defence testimony, Amanda Knox appeared to be a very brave young woman. However, I fear the statements we witnessed before her conviction, so clearly thought out and rational, are examples of how certain individuals may have (wrongly) damned her for her serenity and intelligence. Her demeanour certainly did not seem to have served her defence in the murder of Meredith Kercher.

She may have more wisely chosen to remain silent, as her former boyfriend did. Amanda received a 26 year sentence — one year more than Raffaele Sollecito.

Based on the analysis and information I have read in your paper and other media sources, particularly European, it appears Ms Knox guilt was determined long before the jury delivered its verdict. Therefore I wish her a speedy appeal and a fair resolution to her present dilemma, which must feel like a nightmare to her and her family.

I hope all involved receive the justice they deserve, but I particularly wish comfort and consolation to the family and friends of Meredith Kercher (may she rest in peace). Under the confusing circumstances we often forget the REAL victim of this horrendous crime.

Cantwell Statement

Senator you just got yourself sent packing out of office with those remarks.

Amanda Knox

In response to the Cantwell statement, you must not be a parent to a college aged child or you would not have posted such a stupid remark. I have 5 children and two have studied abroad and I can tell you none of my other children will ever study in Italy knowing what I now know about their judicial system. I too will also be hard pressed to plan a vacation there.

Knoz is guilty and Amanda Knox received justice and that is good

Italian vs American justice

Before making any consideration about the juridical system of another country, Americans should interrogate themselves about their death penalty and the number of people sent to death and then after their execution proven innocent. At least in Italy we do not have this medieval mean of condemnation!
Very of you remember a stupid of your brave USAF pilots breaking a cable car steel wire in northern Italy causing so many victims a few years ago. The guy wanted to wake up with a jet bang our peasants! What did your government do after this tragedy? Nothing! The guy few years after got a promotion! And is this your correct way to intepretate Justice?
However be sure that neither Amanda nor Raffaele will stay too long in Jail (I can bet no more than 3 or 4 years!) Then for good conduct they will be sent to follow some rehabilitation program and eventually set free.
Very few of you consider that Amanda and Raffaele in Perugia made regular use of marijuana at the point to be very inaccurate about the place where they spent the night of the murder. On the other hand what can you expect from who practice daily sex and drugs? Last but not the least, could you imagine somebody who was shocked by her roommate murder, doing cartwheels while waiting to be questioned at the Police Station?
I just wonder if the case, being against an Afro-American individual would have been afforded with the same rate of partisanship!
So please suggest to your lady senator not to agitate herself too much and do not involve Mrs. Clinton or the White House in this dispute. Italy needs USA as much as USA needs Italy, either a stupid pilot or an easy girl do not worth to open a diplomatic dispute between our two countries.

Italian justice?

Posting this all the way from Italy, are you? The evidence against Ms. Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele was thin at best.

No one should be found guilty with such flimsy evidence.

Sorry!

I'm tremendously sorry! I did not know it's forbidden to Italian to post their comments on WSH!
I did not remember that your are superior human being and that being American is the perfect alibi against any judge!
How can third world people like us send to trial an American white girl?

Amanda is a Liar and Racist

I am so sick of hearing about this loser girl that should have received far more time than what was handed to her. Amanda's parents sends her to Italy to gain a meaningful education. Instead, Amanda KNOX lands herself a boyfriend, indulge in sexual filth, and drugs! Now, label this behavior as an average "American" teen or not, from the start of this case Amanda Knox has NOT been honest. Amanda tells the Italian authorities that she was present in the home when she heard her room mate's gut wrenching screams, yet, Amanda quickly changed her statement and says she was not present and heard nothing. The drug pushing African that claim he and Amanda's roommate were an on/off item as well as Amanda, her lover, and the four of them were also getting high together. However, Amanda states she doesn't know him but..... she may have seen him when he probably visited a neighbor. Really....... Then Amanda who has NOTHING to hide tries to set her AFRICAN boss up for the crime and state that he is the one whom actually murdered the roommate. Italian Authorities question this guy and hold this INNOCENT AFRICAN MAN for two weeks based upon AMANDA'S lies. Thankfully, the guy was released. Now Amanda states that the drug dealer that has NO criminal record other than selling drugs is the one that actually is to blame for the young girl's death. Yeah. Then we hear Senator Maria Cantwell who states that based upon the evidence Amanda Knox is ONLY being prosecuted for being an AMERICAN. Really........ To Ms. Senator Cantwell: if ANYONE is being a racist or has shown hate it has been AMANDA KNOX! Amanda has lied from the start and continues to lie. She placed an innocent man at the scene of a murder when he was nowhere in sight. Had he not had any proof of his whereabouts at the time of the murder Amanda and her lover would have allowed this man to do time for a crime she knew and her lover knew he did NOT commit. But hey, that guy was NOT American and was AFRICAN so let's excuse her lies concerning him. Really.........Once again Amanda is placing blame on another AFRICAN guy. My opinion is that her family did not really know their daughter. And if they were aware of her mental state, they kept it hidden and may be the "real" reason for allowing her to go to another country knowing she needed full-time supervision. Someone should investigate Amanda's medical history while she resided in the states because this girl is truly not all there. I feel so much hurt for that poor girl that was brutally murdered by three losers including AMANDA. If there is truly a GOD, Amanda WILL serve her time in Italy or her family will forever be cursed!

If an American citizen is stopped by a Police officer for suspicion of whatever and that Police officer receives fraudulent information from the American Citizen at the time he/she was stopped, that officer is not going to just let him/her go without finding out who he/she is AND if/what he/she is trying to hide. That citizen also face a charge of giving that officer fraudulent information. In other words there are no exceptions for Amanda Knox. Amanda should have been truthful unless she had something to hide. All signs point to YES she definitely had something to hide.
