SLIDESHOW: 10th annual NW Hope and Healing 5K sees hundreds run in the sun
Hundreds of runners, walkers, people with strollers, dogs and kids showed up and did their best on Aug. 26 at the 10th annual Northwest Hope and Healing 5K run/walk. It was sunny, warm weather and the group stretched before the event, enjoying the free food samples and other offerings from sponsors.
They were massed at the starting line and the horn, blown by Tami Hyldahl-Haan, a breast cancer survivor from Seattle, got the participants off and running at 9am.
Hyldahl-Haan spoke briefly before the event and shared her personal story. In 2011, Hyldahl-Hann became a widow and a breast cancer survivor as well as a single mother without a source of income. She was able to access the Northwest Hope & Healing Patient Assistance Fund to help pay her bills and get through a couple of rough months.
The 3.1 mile walk and run started and finished at the Alki Beach Bathhouse (2700 Alki Ave S.W., Seattle).
The top two male winners were
Kelly Spady of Mukilteo, age 25 whose 5.33 per mile pace brought him in with a time of 17:13
and Jack Griffing of Mountlake Terrace age 17 who came in at 18:14.
Female winners were
Karra Whitmire from Bothell, age 34 running at 6.38 per mile and finishing at 20:36.
Behind her in 2nd place was Rebecca Martin of Seattle, age 30 with a time of 21:11.

Northwest Hope & Healing (NWHH) is a Seattle based non-profit organization that helps women get through breast cancer through a variety of efforts, whether it’s helping mothers feed their children and seek treatment, or ensuring reliable transportation to daily radiation treatments. For that reason, a majority of NWHH’s funds go to the NW Hope & Healing Patient Assistance Fund at the Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI) to provide every day living essentials to women who are in need. Over the last 13 years, NWHH has provided financial grants to more than 1,800 women. Donations also fund the organization’s signature Healing Baskets, which are made available to local breast- cancer patients at Swedish’s campuses (First Hill, Cherry Hill, Ballard, Edmonds and Issaquah), as well as at all SCI affiliate locations including Highline Hospital in Burien. Since 2000, more than 6,000 Healing Baskets have been assembled and delivered, carrying a message of love, life and hope.
The Alki Beach Run/Walk 5K is sponsored by Genentech, The Walking Company, Evergreen Home Loans, Alki Spud Fish & Chips, West Seattle Runner, Windermere Foundation, X-Gym, and the Kiwanis of West Seattle.

We encourage all participants to meet a $100 minimum fundraising goal. Although fundraising is not required, we hope you will join us in providing basic needs to women who are battling breast cancer. $25 provides a Healing Basket, $50 buys groceries, $100 keeps the lights on and the phone connected, $250 ensures childcare during treatment and recovery, $500 helps prevent an eviction.
