UPDATE Feb. 11
Plans for a benefit gala to help pay for the finishing touches on the West Seattle Veterans Center (the former American Legion Hall on Alaska Street) have hit a snag due to low ticket sales. Originally scheduled for Feb. 22, the event will now be re-set for a date late in May. "Although we have had many businesses and individuals willing to help us, we didn’t quite get the financial support necessary hit our goals. By shifting the date, we feel we can produce an excellent, successful fundraiser for the WSVC," said organizer Savannah Miller-O'Malley.

UPDATE Jan. 29
The Benefit Gala for the newly rechristened West Seattle Veterans Center has made some changes as Feb. 22 date approaches. Now topping the bill will be Henry At War (who recently opened for Wynona Judd on tour). Plus, the organizers have made it more affordable.

All proceeds will benefit the WSVC and its community outreach efforts including the complete renovation of the old West Seattle American Legion Building or, for West Seattlelites, the building with the big cannon in the front lawn. Once the remodel is complete, the WSVC will operate seven-days-a-week with Veteran staffers aiding and counseling Veterans in the greater Seattle community. The WSVC will offer a wide range of veteran-related assistance including education, home loans, counseling, disability qualifications, family needs.

The WSVC will also house a new elegant Bistro and Lounge with food from Garden Grow Organics. The WSVC will also connect the community through rotating art exhibitions, concerts, classes, community events and conference space. All combined, each element is designed to bring together the Seattle Veteran community and local neighborhoods all in support of Veterans and their families. Lack of funding has held up the next phases and the gala will help finish the project.
