'Astounded' at address

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

I was astounded to find that in Kat Lewin's article "Nation's only independent housing for multiple sclerosis is in Admiral" you published the private residence address for the multiple sclerosis house. This seems like a poor decision considering not only is it a private residence but it is a home for adults with limited mobility and as the article stated "all kinds of cognitive issues."

I am glad to see the Herald covering issues such as multiple sclerosis but hope that in the future they will be more careful with sensitive information to protect their sources. I am just assuming they did not want there address published, they may have given permission but I cannot imagine the residents of the multiple sclerosis home wanting "applicants" for the open residency just dropping by anytime.

I am sure they certainly don't want prowlers, vandals or even worse coming to take advantage of their situation. It just seemed poor taste to run a photo of a wheelchair-bound man saying how safe he feels and then publish his address with location markers such as Hiawatha Park.

After reading your West Seattle police on page 2, which lists several elderly people being attacked, I have to hope that multiple sclerosis house is not next, thanks to the carelessness of the Herald. We can only be lucky that most common criminals don't read the paper.

" We cannot rely on "on the job common sense" any more as more and more Boomers retire. Protection of private information cries out for corporate knowledge management and use policies, especially when it comes to privacy of personal information. And employees need to trained in the importance and application of these policies. "
