Low-level span open for morning commute

Monday, August 13, 2007

Commuters need not worry about traffic delays caused by opening the low-level Spokane Street Bridge for ships or boats.

While repair work is underway on Interstate 5 for the next few weeks, large vessels will not be allowed to sail up the Duwamish River past the Spokane Street Bridge during the morning commute. The hydraulic double-leaf concrete swing bridge will not open to tall vessels between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday through Friday until Aug. 30, said Gregg Hirakawa, spokesman for the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Tugboats and other vessels able to pass beneath the span without the bridge tender having to open the bridge will be allowed to go upriver however.

" I travel this bridge everyday on my way to work and often wondered why it was not closed to boat traffic during peak morning commute times, 6-9am. Traffic could move more efficiently all year long if the city would take a look at some of the changes they had to make to roadways that are actually working for commuters during the I-5 road construction. This is one of the changes that should be left in place even after the I-5 construction is done and would help with the congestion that is created when it is open at any given time during the weekday mornings. Where can suggestion be sent to see if this is a possibilty? "
