" I went back to college after 40 yrs and was surprised to see kids using skateboards as transportation. We need to get off the old idea that getting from point A to point B means jumping in a gas vehicle. Let's build more skateparks and pathways that allow skateboarders to travel through their communities. Why should ALL our transport tax money be used for massive streets that only accomodate noisy, speeding cars and trucks? We need bigger/better bike and pedestrian paths and alternative transportation "corridors" that can be used by low-speed electric vehicles. "

" Gatewood Hill Resident:
Your concerns are valid but your neighborhood is actually full of families who think a skatepark in that site would be a great thing, and they have also been sending in emails and making phone calls to the Parks Department.
Instead of using divisive rhetoric and trying to disparage skaters by making negative generalizations, try doing some research and you'll find that skateparks and skateboarders can often be wonderful neighbors. In fact, they already are your neighbors.
As for noise, the proposed location of the skatepark at Myrtle is very close to the busy and noisy 35th SW, which will easily drown out the minimal skatepark noise.

In the state of Washington, Skateboarding is covered along with all other sports (Basketball, Baseball, etc...) under a "play at your own risk" statue. There is no liability issue. "

" Creating skate parks that include young people in the community, rather than excluding them is a great idea. Skateboarding is not a crime! "

" The Myrtle Street Res community has made it very, very clear that we do NOT support skateboard park development around our peaceful, family oriented neighborhood. Despite Susanne Friedman's efforts to ignore our emails, phone calls, and mass signature lists opposing the possible skateboard park...we will not support this type of activity so close to our homes. We have tolerated enough noise, dirt, strange odors, construction crew disturbances, etc during the last year + w/ the reservior project. Time for a peaceful exit that mandates the open space be preserved for families, etc to enjoy the view without the clatter, noise, and foul language I've witnessed at two local skateboard parks. "

" This article is right on the money. The issue is what recreational opportunities we provide for our kids. Skateboarding offers healthy exercise and can be easily monitored - which isn't true of playing video games or surfing the Internet. Kids these days can get into as much or more trouble sitting at their computers than they can skateboarding in a public park. "

" I think it's fine to create some skateboard facilities IF someone can absolutely guarantee that the city will not be sued when one of these young people breaks an arm or splits open his skull. If the city is open to lawsuits, forget it. "
