Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Dr. Chad Hickox is the new associate dean of academic programs at South Seattle Community College.

Hickox joins South from Michigan's Macomb Community College where he was interim associate dean for Humanities and a tenured philosophy instructor. As a leader in college service learning and sustainability initiatives, he identified community partnerships, and developed a strategic plan for campus sustainability. Off-campus, he was an active member of his local community, and was appointed by the mayor and city council to serve on the Ferndale, Mich., Environmental Impact Commission.

Hickox earned his doctorate in Philosophy from The State University of New York at Buffalo. He resides in West Seattle with his wife, Chessa, and son, Silas.

" I hold Dr. Chad Hickox to be 'responsible' for stimulating my already inherent but dormant desire to seek knowledge. Also, if one may,I can echo at least the same thing that Immanuel Kant once said about David Hume:"I have been awakened from my dogmatic chamber by David Hume".On that note, I can say the same: perhaps Dr. Chad is the reason why I left behind so many of my fanatical convictions that I used to hold once as being immovable. I realize now that progress is not about gathering a multiplicity of truths, but instead it is about challenging the most salient aspects of the ones that we hold to be true.
Although Philosophy doesn't always put bread on the table, it indeed satiates the mind-the soul, and thus one can use other means in attaining his nutritional needs.
Dr. Chad is a person I truly admire for his formal role as a professor while at the same time for his informal friendship that we've developed over time. I certainly don't want to accredit my entire academic achievements to Dr. Chad :), but I can at least acknowledge him as the one who initiated the whole process.
I am currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Philosophy.
Earnestly
Marius "
