Jewel is protective Ever since a new baby came into the house, Jewel has been very protective of the house and family. Is it something about babies? Photo by Kim Robinson

Jewel the Guard Cat

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

Normally Jewel is a calm kitty, even watching the raccoons stroll through her yard without flinching.

But when Matthew Garcia stepped out of the front door with baby Bianca in his arms, Jewel lunged at the raccoon that was in the front yard. The raccoon stepped back but seemed unphased. Two days later Matthew and his wife Erika Marques were enjoying the morning of July 1st when they heard what sounded like Jewel scaring some cats out of the yard until they recognized a growl. Matthew went to check only to find a very large raccoon on his eight pound cat. All he could see was the cats tail. He ran back, got the broom and swung it at the offender. The big coon moved about fifteen feet, but the cat shot out of the yard and wasn't seen for eight days. She finally limped back into their lives with a broken Fibula, a fractured hip and two puncture wounds.

After three days of food, fluids and medicine she did just fine. She is a very lucky long haired domestic cat that almost gave her life for her family.
