A look back: 2013 CSIHS spring sports season recap

By Sam Reed
Athletic Director/Activity Coordinator
Chief Sealth International High School

Last spring I led my season recap by saying that it was “my belief that the ‘12 spring sports season at Chief Sealth International High School will be one that sets a new standard for excellence and success.”
That statement proved true this year, as our athletes turned out in droves this spring, driven by high expectations. Led by a strong senior class, 254 student-athletes donned Seahawk apparel and demonstrated the “Sealth pride” that’s now come to be expected. Now, as this season and year comes to a close, it’s difficult to conger up the words to express what this group of seniors has meant to the school and to the athletic programs they’ve participated in. While it will be hard to see them go, the list of successes of all below should help demonstrate the strength of the program they’re leaving behind.

Beware scammers posing as City Light employees

Seattle City Light and the Seattle Police Department are warning people to beware of con artists, posing as Seattle City Light employees using false threats of disconnecting electrical service to get money from people.

According to City LIght customers reported at least 15 scam attempts to City Light this week and other utilities in the Pacific Northwest have reported similar activity. In Seattle, the scammers appear to be targeting Asian small businesses.

In a press release on the problem City Light explained:

"The con works like this: A person claiming to work for the utility calls a customer and claims the account is overdue. The caller then threatens to cut off electricity service unless payment is made immediately.

One new twist in this old scam has the con artists seeking payment by pre-paid debit cards, which might not have the same fraud-detection features as a credit card.

Last month the Robinson Newspapers' Highline Times featured Burien resident, Kevin Daniel, and the Seattle South King Sluggers blind beep baseball team he is helping to organize. You can read that article here.

Daniel is seeing impaired and works as a job recruiter for Lighthouse for the Blind in Seattle. However, they are not affiliated with the Sluggers.

After lining up sponsorships and a ball field, a tryout and first practice date has been set, and Daniel invites men and women in the seeing impaired community to try out, or just cheer on participants, Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Walt Hundley Park (Field #2), 6920 34th Av. SW. in West Seattle.

Metro route #21 services this area, and the ball field is a few blocks away.

Seattle Public Schools releases summary of 2012 Healthy Youth Survey

The state-funded Healthy Youth Survey (conducted every two years and sent out to 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th graders) results are in, and provide a glimpse into the healthy and not-so-healthy predilections of Seattle students.

Seattle Public Schools dove into the data and came up with the following trends from the anonymous, voluntary survey conducted in October of 2012:

From SPS
- The percentage of eighth-grade students who engage in 60-plus minutes of physical activity five or more days per week increased from 34 percent in 2008 to 49 percent in 2012.

- Television watching also declined among both middle and high school students. In the 2012 survey, 25 percent of eighth-graders said they watched three or more hours of TV on an average school day; in 2006, that number was 37 percent. The rate of TV viewing among high school students dropped from 28 percent in 2008 to 19 percent in 2012.

- Rates of being bullied in the past month has declined among 6th grade students from 26 percent in 2008 to 22 percent in 2012.

Alki Masons honor West Seattle’s talented juniors

In a tradition reaching back 35 years, the Alki Masonic Lodge held their Annual School Awards on May 20 to honor the hard work, both in the classroom and the community, of eight juniors each from Chief Sealth and West Seattle High School.

In the words of the Mason’s, “The purpose of this School Awards Program is to recognize, and thus stimulate, participation in Public School Education. The Masonic Fraternity has long supported the public school system as one of the basic necessities in maintaining the American Ideal of Democracy.”

Mason Martin Monk, who ran the show, said the 35th anniversary was a special one for him since he had received the award 35 years ago as a student at West Seattle High School.

In addition to a plaque honoring their achievements, the juniors also received $200. After the first 16 recipients were announced (and who in turn announced the support of their family and friends in attendance), the Mason’s unveiled their four winners out of that gro
