King County Airport issues noise notice about upcoming flights

In an unusual move the King County Airport, commonly referred to as Boeing Field, issued a notification about some upcoming flights that are likely to get not only attention but will generate noticeable noise.

The West Seattle Herald has more information on the visiting B-17 here.

press release:
We have been advised by the Museum of Flight that upcoming flight events may create noisy conditions for communities surrounding Boeing Field, such as the neighborhoods of Georgetown, Beacon Hill, Magnolia, West Seattle; and portions of Renton and Tukwila:

Beginning on May 21 and lasting through Memorial Day weekend, the Museum of Flight is hosting B-17 Bomber tours and rides on the Seattle-born Aluminum Overcast; and a range of vintage military aircraft sponsored by the Cascade War Birds Fly In.

Residents should be aware that these aircraft are sanctioned by permits from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and are intended for the enjoyment of pilots, fans of aviation history, and the general public.

B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" at Boeing Field May 24-27 for “Salute to Veterans” national tour

The B-17 “Aluminum Overcast,” the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EEA) restored B-17 bomber, arrives at Boeing Field by the Seattle Museum of Flight this Monday, May 21. Tours of the aircraft, and rides, are available May 24 to 27. The event is hosted by "The Cascade Warbirds ".

In a related West Seattle Herald article, here, King County has issued a press release alerting area residents to increased noise.

The Aluminum Overcast is on its year-long, “Salute to Veterans” national tour. The plane was built in 1945, but was delivered to the Army Air Corps too late to see active service in World War II. It was donated to the EAA Aviation Foundation in 1981 with the provision of the aircraft being maintained in airworthy condition. After being displayed at the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin for a decade, the airplane made its national tour debut in the spring of 1994.

Pros and cons arise in anti-gang zone proposal for North Highline

During the week of May 7 King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn (District 9) proposed legislation (2012-0135) that would allow the council to establish “anti-criminal street gang emphasis areas” in unincorporated swaths of King County, and give judges the ability to bar people convicted of gang-related crimes from entering those areas. If deputies see individuals banned from an area spending time there, they can be arrested.

The legislation is similar to already-established “Stay out of Drug Areas (SODA)” and “Stay out of Areas of Prostitution (SOAP)” where repeat offenders of drug or prostitution activity can be arrested for entering those areas. It differs from SODA and SOAP in its scope: While SODA and SOAP cover geographical zones and entire neighborhoods, the gang-free zones would be determined on a parcel by parcel basis, by the council.

Historic Fire Station 37 sold for $613,000; Buyers name not released

press release
The historic former Fire Station 37, located at 7300 35th Ave. S.W. in West Seattle, has been sold for $613,000, city officials announced today. The city set a minimum price of $250,000 for the property.

With a 5 percent commission on the sale and other minor closing costs, the city netted $579,807.25. The revenue from this sale will help replenish the Fire Facilities and Emergency Response Levy Fund. Levy proceeds and other funding, such as the sale of former fire stations, are being used to upgrade, renovate and replace 32 neighborhood fire stations, among other things. Seattle voters approved the levy in November 2003.

In September 2011, the City Council authorized sale by competitive process of this former West Seattle station and former Fire Station 38 in the Ravenna-Bryant neighborhood. Conclusion of that sale is pending and details will be released once the sale has closed.
