Police Blotter Week of 5-20-13

Hair salon ripped off
West Seattle’s Ola Salon on Avalon Way was broken into sometime Wednesday night, May 15, and the unknown suspects stole an estimated $25,000 worth of cash, tools of the hairdressing trade and computers. Strangely, instead of ransacking the place and leaving everything in disarray, the crooks politely closed drawers after removing items from them, and left the place seemingly untouched until a closer inspection revealed the loss. Police continue to investigate and look for tips.

Technology gives front row seat to burglary
The owner of a home on the 4700 block of 46th Ave. S.W. was at work in the early afternoon May 10 when his phone alerted him that his basement surveillance cameras had just been activated. From his phone, the victim watched a male suspect enter the basement carrying a backpack and wearing gloves. The victim called police and they responded, but the suspect was gone by the time they arrived. Surveillance footage was able to pick up “high quality” images of the suspect that were submitted into evidence along with a fingerprint found on the outer sill of the entry point window.

Kids and their Facebook …
On May 12 a teenager on lunch break near a West Seattle high school was approached by much larger classmate who stole her backpack. The victim later told police she was afraid to fight for the backpack because the suspect was much larger and associates with a West Seattle gang. As the suspect prepared to board a Metro bus with the pack, the victim yelled for it back, and the suspect threw it at her … minus a cell phone. After talking with her parents, the victim called 911 and showed police her Facebook (online social networking site) page where she had pleaded with the suspect for her phone back. The suspect responded with threats to beat her up, “put her six feet under” and “watch as the ambulance takes her away.” The suspect also allegedly took a photo of herself with the stolen phone and posted it to Facebook. Police contacted the suspect’s mother and were working to set up a time to meet and discuss a possible robbery arrest.

Keep those windows closed
In the precautionary tales file from a May 8 daytime burglary on the 4000 block of 45th Ave. S.W., the victim decided to leave a few windows slightly opened to keep the house cool during the day while temperatures rose into the 80s. When she returned, she found someone noticed her kitchen window was slightly ajar and used that opportunity to creep in and steal high quality camera equipment along with vintage jewelry.

New mother struck by rock
On May 4 along the 2500 block of S.W. Barton St., a new mother was spending time with her mom and son and loading items into the car when she felt a sharp pain as something struck her back. She whirled around to see four young teenagers ducking behind a nearby vehicle and realized she had been struck by a rock. She watched the kids weave through several cars before getting into a silver sedan with two young adults driving. The victim approached the adults to explain what she believed the young men had done, to which they acted dismissive and threatened to sue as they drove away.

Good Samaritan turns in drugs
In early May a man left his Beach Dr. S.W. home for the day. At 10:40 a.m. he received a call from his doctor’s office stating a Good Samaritan had just turned in his medication after finding it on a street corner at 59th Ave. S.W. and S.W. Admiral Way. The victim returned home to find someone had broken into his apartment and stolen the medication along with an iPad.

Caught in the act
On May 4 a man returned home to his 45th Ave. S.W. home just before 8 p.m. and came face to face with another male walking out of his front door with arms full of the victim’s belongings. He yelled at the burglar, who took off running. Entering his home, he yelled again and saw another male bolt out a side door. The victim gave chase, and watched the men jump into a burgundy minivan and take off. The burglars were able to take off with several items (including a platinum and diamond ring valued at $14000), but left many others piled up in the living room.

Crimes reported from May 6 through May 12

Robberies by block: 9000 Delridge Way S.W., 2400 S.W. Kenyon St.

Police Blotter Week of 5-6-13

Never too old to throw a punch
Police were called to a South Park nursing home on April 28 after a 92-year-old woman and her elderly roommate (age not given) got into a fight. Nurses said the two started fighting after the 92-year-old confronted her roomie about the perpetual mess she lives in, which was spilling over into the pair’s common area. The untidy woman said she was punched in the shoulder and, as a result of the melee, was moved to a different floor. No arrests were made.

Hold up in South Delridge
Just after 8 p.m. on April 28 a young man walked into a store on the 9400 block of 16th Ave. S.W., pulled out a handgun and pointed it sideways at the clerk and threw a backpack at him, demanding he fill it with cash. The victim invited the robber to come around the counter and take what he wanted, but he refused. After the victim handed over cash and his wallet, the suspect fled northbound. A K-9 tracking unit was able to pick up the crook’s scent and followed it to an alley on Delridge Way S.W. where a Seahawks baseball cap was found (matching the suspect description). The trail ended there. The suspect was described as a mixed race male with light skin wearing a dark blue hoody, dark blue pants, thick glasses (“almost goggle-like”) wearing blue latex gloves and donning a light mustache.

iPhone theft and honesty
A teenager told her parents she was sleeping over at a friend’s house in the Admiral District on April 26, but the two friends managed to alter their plans and sneak out to meet some boys at the Admiral Safeway. They met up with several more teens inside the store. The eventual suspect asked one of the teen girls if he could borrow her iPhone 5 to make a call. She agreed and he started walking away acting as if he was making a call. He kept walking and disappeared in the aisles. The victim said her friend spotted him across the street and confronted him, but the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun, ending the conversation. The next day, the victim had to come clean with her parents about what happened once they questioned where her phone ended up. They then called the police.

Crimes reported from April 29 through May 5:

Police Blotter Week of 4-29-13

Incoming police chief comes clean
With Seattle Police Chief John Diaz retiring at the end of May, his interim replacement Chief Jim Pugel will take the helm. In an unexpected move, Pugel voluntarily released an SPD training video he was part of created in 1986 that made fun of homeless people living under the Viaduct with a song called “Under the Viaduct” to the tune of “Under the Boardwalk.” The video is available for viewing at www.spdblotter.seattle.gov. In his apology, Pugel said, in part, “I regret my participation and have professionally apologized for my role in it. I do so now publicly, I am truly sorry.” The video was deemed offensive by SPD command at the time it was made and ordered destroyed, but a master copy was kept in their video unit. Pugel said he has volunteered for homeless causes many times since that video was made and, “As a police department, we have much work to do to strengthen our relationships in the community. Sometimes that means addressing an ugly piece of our history.”

Safe capers fall short
A woman living on the 3200 block of S.W. 100th St. came home on April 21 after being away for work for a few days to find her home had been broken into. As she perused the crime scene she noticed something strange: small, muddy tire tracks leading from the broken window used as an access point to her bedroom. In her room, the victim found two of her wheelbarrows (“previously in her backyard” as the reporting officer wrote) with a large heavy safe nearby. It appeared the unknown suspects tried to wheel their loot away, but couldn’t quite muster the strength. Instead, the unsavory characters stole jewelry and knocked a picture of the woman’s grandchild to the ground. A fingerprint dusting was unsuccessful in pulling clear prints.

Chipping away
An unknown burglar broke into a S.W. Juneau St. home in the early evening hours of April 16 by slowly whittling away at the wooden door until the deadbolt was exposed and could be disengaged. The reporting officer said the secluded location of the door would have allowed the thief to spend ample time with his or her nontraditional technique.

House alarm works as advertised
While house alarms sometimes get a bad rap for being ineffective in truly reducing the risk of a burglary, an alarm did its job well on April 22. Police said someone tried to break into a home on the 9400 block of 8th Ave. S.W. shortly after 11 a.m. The victim was at work and received a call from an alarm company employee who said her hallway monitor was going off, but the sound monitor was not picking up any footsteps inside. The unknown burglar broke into a kitchen window that had the alarm company’s logo on it, using a window punch tool to break the glass and gain entry. Responding officers said it appeared the crook tripped the hallway alarm and fled the scene immediately as nothing appeared to be missing or disturbed.

Past neighbor suspected
Someone ransacked a house on the 3900 block of S.W. Bradford St. during the day on April 21, stealing several pieces of high-quality jewelry including gold rings with emeralds, diamonds and pearls and gold-encrusted watches. Two M-96 Swedish Mauser rifles were also stolen. A neighbor of the victim told police he saw an old neighbor, known as a drug user who no longer lived in the area, wandering about the block that day.

Crimes reported from April 21 – 25
Robberies by block: None to report

Burglaries by block: 7700 27th Ave. S.W., 9400 12th Ave. S.W., 9400 7th Ave. S.W., 9400 8th Ave. S.W., 3900 S.W. Bradford St., 3200 S.W. 100th St., 3200 Alki Ave. S.W., 2600 42nd Ave. S.W., 1300 Harbor Ave. S.W., 8900 California Ave. S.W., 2600 42nd Ave. S.W., 6300 29th Ave. S.W., 8400 41st Ave. S.W.

Car prowls by block: 5600 Delridge Way S.W., 4000 S.W. Thistle St., 2800 S.W. Bataan St.

Vehicle thefts by block: 6600 Fauntleroy Way S.W., 4000 S.W. Thistle St., 4000 32nd Ave. S.W., 8100 6th Ave. S.W.
Police Blotter Week of 4-22-13

Ecstasy turns friend into foe
On April 16, in the early evening hours, a group of friends were at the West Seattle Stadium watching an acquaintance participate in a Special Olympics competition. One of the women decided she wanted to leave the event and stated her intention, causing another friend to become very irate. The woman left anyways, but her irritated friend followed her with a skateboard to the entrance on 35th Ave. S.W. There, the “friend” called the victim a few explicit terms and struck her in the arm and back with the skateboard before punching and slapping her. Police arrived around that time and discovered the aggressive friend had ingested two Ecstasy pills earlier in the day and appeared to be having a bad trip. The victim refused medical attention at the scene and said she would go to the hospital herself. The suspect on drugs was handcuffed and transported to Harborview for assessment. She would later be arrested for assault.

Intervention turns ugly
As April 14 approached midnight, a husband and wife living in an apartment on the 6500 block of California Ave. S.W. heard a disturbance and stepped outside to take a look. There, they saw two men trying to pull an acquaintance out of his car with the apparent goal of assault. The couple yelled at the men to stop and walked out to the scene. At that time, the victims said the two men turned around and started attacking them. The woman said she was punched several times and lost consciousness briefly. The man said he was thrown to the ground and had his neck scratched (police could see scratch marks on his neck). It was unclear what role the third male (the one who was originally being pulled from his vehicle) played once the suspects turned their attention away, but it was clear he did not intervene on the victims' behalf (he would later give police no information on who his attackers were). The suspects fled the scene before police arrived. The female victim told police she thinks the man they were initially trying to help may have punched her as well, but refused to press charges against him because they were friends.

Shooting victim on the road to recovery
27-year-old Rick Powell, the Capitol Hill resident who was shot in the chest four times in an attempted robbery on S.W. Avalon Way in West Seattle on April 1, is out of the hospital and recovering, according to the administrators of an online fundraiser to help pay his medical bills. On April 15, it was reported that Powell was released from the hospital “and relaxing and recovering in the comfort of his family’s home.” Powell, who had a concealed weapons permit, was able to shoot his alleged attacker (19-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia-Mendez) in the confrontation. Mendez is facing assault and unlawful possession of a firearm charges. He had just been released from prison days before the attack.
Police Blotter Week of 4-15-13

Trouble walking
On April 8 a man walked into a business on the 9400 block of Delridge Way S.W., stuck a can of fertilizer under his sweatshirt, walked to the back of the store to push it further down into his pants, and then tried to walk out the front door unnoticed. His plan failed as an employee confronted the man and asked him to return the product. The man denied any wrongdoing and a scuffle broke out between the two. The employee was able to pull the suspect’s backpack , sweatshirt and hat off in the melee, and the suspect retaliated by biting the victim’s arm (not breaking the skin) before fleeing west on S.W. Cambridge St. Responding officers, based on the information gathered on their suspect, believe it is the same man who recently threatened to create a bomb to blow up the McDonald’s in Westwood Village. An area check for the suspect was unsuccessful, but the victim in this case said she could identify him from a photo montage “easily.”

Not today
On April 3 a young man was walking near Chief Sealth High School with his girlfriend when a vehicle with four other youngsters pulled up and asked if they wanted to by some “kush” (which is slang for marijuana). They declined the offer and continued along their way until one of the young men stepped out of the car and demanded the male victim’s necklace. After the victim refused, the suspect punched him in the chest and attempted (unsuccessfully) to rip away the necklace. The victim responded with a swift right to the suspect’s face. The robber gave up at that point, getting back into his vehicle and slinking away.

Picky thief
Someone broke into a 42nd Ave. S.W. home on the afternoon of April 7 and stole a large bag filled with $200 in coins and three watches. The unknown suspect forwent many expensive electronics, fancy guitars, and mounds of jewelry surrounding the three watches that were taken. It appeared the thief shattered a rear glass door to gain entry. Responding officers dusted the crime scene for fingerprints.

In dire need of keys
An unknown suspect broke into the shop room of an apartment complex on the 2400 block of S.W. Webster St. on April 2. Since he or she did not have a key, they used some sort of tool to pry the door open. Once inside, they stole a key duplication machine worth $470.

Wrong level
In the early afternoon on April 5, someone kicked in a 14th Ave. S.W. home’s basement window. Once inside, the crook apparently realized the basement was nearly empty and left without venturing to the upper levels.

Crimes reported from April 8 through April 18:

Robberies by block: 9400 Delridge Way S.W.

Burglaries by block: 11000 Marine View Dr. S.W., 6300 46th Ave. S.W., 8800 9th Ave S.W., 9400 7th Ave S.W., 10600 Marine View Dr. S.W.

Car prowls by block: 3800 19th Ave. S.W., corner of Delridge Way S.W./S.W. Genesee St., 8600 24th Ave. S.W., 6500 Beach Dr. S.W., 8400 32nd Ave. S.W.

Vehicle thefts by block: 1600 S.W. Austin St., 6300 34th Ave. S.W., 4100 S.W. Lander St., 7900 27th Ave. S.W., 9000 31st Ave. S.W., 3000 S.W. Barton St., 3400 S.W. Raymond St., 3100 S.W. Raymond St., 8800 12th Ave. S.W.
Police Blotter Week of 4-8-13

Same house targeted by gunfire three times
In less than one month, the same house on the 2000 block of S.W. Cloverdale St. has been shot at on three separate occasions by unknown suspects. The latest shooting occurred on April 2 around 10:15 p.m. when neighbors reported seeing a gold Ford Taurus circle around the block, and then park near the home. Two men stepped out, pulled out handguns, and fired at the home. No one has been injured and the victims told detectives they have no idea why they are being targeted.

Predictive policing at work
In the late evening of April 1, a Southwest Precinct officer was patrolling the Admiral district as part of his “passive predictive patrol circle” (SPD recently started using historical crime statistics and data-crunching technology to figure out where they should patrol, essentially trying to predict where crime will occur). He was approached by a woman walking her dogs who said a disturbance was happening in an alleyway nearby. The officer drove to the rear of an establishment where a large group of people pointed in the northbound direction where a man in a grey Jeep Cherokee has supposedly just brandished a handgun before fleeing. A man and woman in the group, who are now dating, claimed the suspect was the former boyfriend of the woman and father of her three children. The woman reported she had been receiving constant text threats from her former partner, which lead to the Admiral-area confrontation where the new boyfriend claimed he was able to wrestle the gun from the aggressor, but gave it back to him before he left.

Burglary attempt caught from two angles
Late last month a woman was walking near the High Point Library when she saw two young men working together to try to get into a home through a window. She called 911 and suddenly the males jumped down from the window and scattered. It turned out the window they were attempting to use for entry was the bedroom window of a resident who was home sick for the day and in bed. The victim saw the male’s face appear in his window, stood up and out of bed, and the suspects fled. The woman who called 911 from the street told police she could positively identify the suspects and a male fitting her description was spotted and detained by police. The woman positively identified him as one of the attempted-burglars and he was taken to the Southwest Precinct. Once there, an SPD Detective decided to let the suspect go because the witness was only able to see his backside during the alleged crime and refused to get any closer to the suspect than 50 yards for positive identification.

Reported crimes from April 1 to April 7:

Robberies by block: corner of 25th Ave. S.W./S.W. Thistle St., 2600 S.W. Barton St.

Burglaries by block: 3700 S.W. 98th St., 7000 18th Ave. S.W., 2400 S.W. Webster St., 2900 S.W. Avalon Way, 3200 California Ave. S.W., 2900 S.W. Avalon Way, 5000 35th Ave. S.W., 8100 14th Ave. S.W., 2300 S.W. Hudson St.,

Car prowls by block: 8000 Fauntleroy Way S.W. (two on the same day), corner 8th Ave. S.W./S.W. Cambridge St., 9000 8th Ave. S.W., 2600 S.W. Andover St., corner of 28th Ave. S.W./S.W. Andover St., 8800 9th Ave. S.W., 4500 37th Ave. S.W., 5400 49th Ave. S.W., corner of Harbor Ave. S.W./California Way S.W., corner of 20th Ave. S.W./S.W. Henderson St.

Vehicle thefts by block: 6000 Fauntleroy Way S.W., 6300 35th Ave. S.W., 6000 Lanham Pl. S.W., 7900 29th Ave. S.W., 2600 S.W. Barton St., 5900 S.W. Admiral Way, 4500 Beach Dr. S.W., 5000 40th Ave. S.W.
Police Blotter Week of 4-1-13

Purple sweatpants = trouble
It was just after 1 a.m. at the Yen Wor Village Bar in the Admiral District on March 25 when a male patron wearing purple sweatpants started acting strangely. Bar staff said the man was repeatedly pulling his sweatpants down to reveal his birthday suit. When they asked him to refrain from the activity, the man pulled them down once again and mooned the entire bar. Uninterested in continuing the show, staff told the man he needed to pay his tab and leave. Instead, the suspect walked into a back hallway, ripped a fire extinguisher off the wall and started spraying the place down. The bar evacuated their customers and called police. When police arrived, fittingly, their suspect was found with his purple sweatpants around his ankles. He was arrested for property damage and indecent exposure.

Polevia finally arrested
31-year-old Alan Polevia has been a thorn in the King County Sheriff’s Office’s side for weeks. Arrested for a slew of property crime charges, in February he escaped deputy custody at Harborview Hospital and ran away in handcuffs. He reappeared in West Seattle on March 5 (sans handcuffs) and, despite a manhunt using K-9s and a helicopter, he was able to slink into the shadows yet again. Polevia made the TV show Washington’s Most Wanted as a result of his shenanigans and on March 22 a viewer who had seen his picture saw the man digging through a dumpster near a Burien apartment. The witness called police and they were there within minutes. When first contacted, Polevia told deputies they had the wrong guy because his name was “Alex Polevia,” not “Alan Polevia.” It didn’t work, and he was arrested.

The ol’ cab switcheroo
On March 14, 33-year-old Michael Kelley and his several outstanding warrants were passengers in a stolen vehicle driving through White Center. A King County Sheriff’s Office deputy noticed the car had expired tabs and pulled it over. Kelley and his warrants ran away. Several deputies had responded to the scene and were planning their next moves in tracking Kelley when a cab driver pulled up and asked if they had seen “Michael?” A plan quickly hatched and police asked the cabbie if they could borrow his ride for a minute. One deputy posed as a cab driver while another hid in the backseat. After driving around the area for a few minutes Michael Kelley popped out from behind some bushes to get into the cab he had called to be whisked away from trouble. He was given a fare-free ride to jail.

Block by block crime statistics and police reports were unavailable from the Seattle Police Department this week due to computer system maintenance on their end. As a result, there is no breakdown of crimes in this column. Our apologies and we'll be back to the usual next week!
Police Blotter Week of 3-25-13

Chivalrous push?
A patient at a medical facility on the 2600 block of S.W. Holden Way was arrested on March 20 after an alleged pushing incident. The victim (also a patient) told police he was walking down the hallway two days earlier when the suspect, without warning, pushed him in the back. He fell to the floor and ended up breaking a bone in his right forearm. When police interviewed the suspect he told them the victim was acting inappropriately towards a female patient, which acted as a “trigger” that forced him to physically push the man. Police decided to arrest the patient for investigation of assault.

Did anyone bring a forklift and a truck?
On March 15, sometime after a business on the 400 block of S. Cloverdale St. in South Park closed for the day, someone cut through the chain link fence and broke into a trailer where they pulled four large stainless steel pieces of equipment out. Apparently unable to move the heavy equipment any further, the unknown suspect(s) gave up and left the scene. Employees arrived in the morning to find the trailer door open and the nearly-stolen equipment in a patch of grass nearby.

Knife thief
On March 17 police were dispatched to a store on the 4700 block of 44th Ave. S.W. because a suspect had just shoplifted several knives from a display case. The suspect, described from video surveillance as a white male, 25 to 30 years old, with a goatee and wire frame glasses, fled the scene on a white “female” multispeed bicycle without a helmet.

Mystery assault
Shortly after midnight on March 12 a Southwest Precinct officer was driving near the intersection of 37th Ave. S.W. and S.W. Cambridge St. looking for a suspicious vehicle when he saw a male wandering in the street. The man flagged the officer down and as he got closer he realized the man “was bleeding profusely from several facial and head injuries.” The officer immediately called for medics and talked with the man while they were en route. The victim, who was “very intoxicated,” told the officer he lived in Ballard but was unable to describe what had happened. An area check for the scene of the assault and potential evidence was unsuccessful. The man was taken away by ambulance with a broken jaw amongst other injuries.

Crimes reported from March 18 to March 24

Robberies by block: None reported

Burglaries by block: 6400 High Point Dr. S.W., 3700 S.W. Southern St., 8600 34th Ave. S.W., 9400 5th Ave. S.W., 9000 16th Ave. S.W., 3200 S.W.
Police Blotter Week of 3-18-13

Misguided anger?
A business owner on the 4000 block of California Ave. S.W. was surprised in the early morning hours of March 12 when he heard a noise at the front door while preparing to open for the day. He saw someone in dark clothes crouched by the door, and when the suspect saw him he popped up and ran to a waiting vehicle that sped away. The business owner called 911 and “was very abusive” to operators, according to the police report, “and would not answer basic questions that are routinely asked for officer safety.” Once officers arrived they were met with yet more “abuse and hostile” behavior from the distraught man. Investigating the source of the noise, police found a small section of molding around the door had been jarred loose, but was easily popped back into place by hand.

Pistol whipped for $21
A man was leaving his office on the 4700 block of 40th Ave. S.W. around 10 p.m. on March 11 when an unknown male walked up behind him and said, “Gimme your money.” The victim turned and the suspect hit him in the forehead with a black pistol. The victim attempted to give the robber his entire wallet, but the suspect insisted on only wanting the cash inside. $21 was forcefully exchanged and the suspect ran off towards Fauntleroy Way S.W. The suspect was described as a white male, early 20s, 5-11, 170 lbs. with a foreign accent. The suspect had emerged from a walkway along the block that is known by locals as an area where “transients will stand or sit … and drink alcohol,” according to the report.

Strange trade
On March 11 a South Park resident realized someone had broken the lock to her detached garage. Inside, she discovered many things had been shuffled around, but nothing seemed to be missing. Instead, she found a garbage can sitting in the middle of her back yard full of wire, copper, a jacket, a bag of clothing and a glass mason jar filled with water (hopefully). The items were checked for latent fingerprints but none were found, so the woman said she planned to donate the discarded goods to Goodwill.
Police Blotter Week of 3-11-13

Watch out for the beige Suburban
Possibly linked, police have responded to three burglaries in the past weeks all related to a very similar looking beige Chevy Suburban with Arizona license plates as the getaway vehicle. In the most recent incident on March 4, a homeowner living on 31st Ave. S.W. returned home after picking his daughter up from school around 4 p.m. and saw the Suburban parked in his circular driveway. Suddenly, two suspects emerged from his home and ran to the waiting vehicle. Suspect #1 was described as a heavy-set, possibly Samoan male with a long pony tail and facial hair. A good description of the second suspect was not available. The burglars fled and the victim went inside to find jewelry missing. It appeared the suspects used a power drill to remove the entire lock mechanism from the back door to gain entry.

Same M.O., different results
An unknown person attempted to dismantle the front door of a small market on the 5900 block of California Ave. S.W. on March 3, but failed in their attempt. It appeared someone had removed metal trimming around a glass pane, but was unable to remove the pane itself. Sometime that same night, someone used the same technique to successfully remove a glass pane from a convenience store on the 4000 block of California Ave. S.W. Once the glass was gone, the unknown suspect was able to unlock the door and steal lottery tickets, a laptop, two iPhones and cigarettes. The cash register was untouched. A video of the burglary revealed an unknown race male wearing gloves and a mask committing the crime.

Robbing for a brand
On the afternoon of March 2, a man walked into a drug store on the 6300 block of California Ave S.W. The clerk noticed that man as someone who had stolen from them before and told him he couldn’t be in the store. The suspect ignored the new rule and walked behind the counter, headed straight for the cigarettes. The clerk knew he was going for smokes (that was his target in the past), so she blocked the wall of nicotine with her body and put her hand in front of the specific brand he goes for. The man forced her arm out of the way and stole seven packs of his preferred brand. Police were given a copy of the videotape and told the man may live in a nearby apartment complex.

New friend, missing items
A mother living on the 4100 block of Delridge Way S.W. called police on March 1 to report several items had turned up missing at their home ever since her 12 year old son started hanging out with a new friend. Her son reported missing video games and handheld video game consoles over the past few weeks, and the mother discovered her son’s house key was also missing. On March 1, she came home to find her door unlocked, the deadbolt disengaged like only a key could.

Crimes reported from March 4 to March 10:
Robberies by block: Corner of California Ave. S.W./Fauntleroy Way S.W., corner of 26th Ave. S.W./S.W. Trenton St.

Burglaries by block: 10600 31st Ave. S.W., 2400 S.W. Webster St., 2600 S.W. Barton St., 4500 42nd Ave. S.W., 7900 31st Ave. S.W., 9200 25th Ave. S.W., 3300 30th Ave. S.W., 1200 S.W. Cambridge St., 3800 40th Ave. S.W., 3600 46th Ave. S.W., 3200 S.W. Avalon Way, 8400 35th Ave. S.W.

Vehicle thefts by block: 4500 48th Ave. S.W., 2800 S.W. Barton St., 8100 8th Ave. S.W., 10200 California Ave. S.W., 3900 S.W. 102nd St., corner of S.W. Roxbury St./Kelsey Ln. S.W., 5200 23rd Ave. S.W., 4500 41st Ave. S.W., 4700 40th Ave. S.W., 9400 27th Ave. S.W., 9200 17th Ave. S.W., 4500 California Ave. S.W.

Car prowls by block: 1700 Alki Ave. S.W., 7700 20th Ave. S.W., 3900 S.W. Othello St., 7500 34th Ave. S.W., 3800 S.W. 106th St., 5400 17th Ave. S.W., 2600 S.W. Barton St.
Police Blotter Week of 3-4-13

Criminal condolences
On Feb. 26 a woman returned to her 34th Ave. S.W. home after attending her mother’s memorial service. She went to the backyard to place a flower arrangement from the funeral on the patio when she saw another woman. The victim asked the trespasser what she was doing, to which she replied, “I’m looking for my dog Bailey.” Before hurriedly leaving the home, the suspect told the victim “Sorry about the loss of your mother.” As the victim noticed a cut in one of her window screens, she realized she had not told the mystery woman about her mother’s death, but had posted the memorial date and time on the Internet.

Rottweiler tricked
On the morning of Feb. 22 someone broke into a family’s 35th Ave. S.W. home and stole over $1,400 in cash and the family Rottweiler’s collar and tags. The victims told police the “very large black and brown” dog would not have likely let a stranger into the home, let alone let him or her close enough to remove his collar. The parents suspected their daughter’s ex-boyfriend in the burglary, noting he was friendly with the big dog. Police did a background check on the ex-boyfriend, revealing a first degree burglary conviction in 2011 and a 21 month sentence to state prison. However, a call to prison revealed the potential suspect was no longer incarcerated.

Urine trouble
Seattle Police and King County Metro officers worked together to apprehend and arrest a male suspected of theft, lewd activity and assault near a California Ave. S.W. bus stop on Feb. 21. It all started when a man sitting at a bus shelter witnessed the suspect urinating nearby, in the open. The man asked the suspect to use a restroom in the future, to which the suspect reportedly walked over and hit the man in the head. The two quarreled until King County fare enforcement officers arrived and split it up. The victim then realized his phone was missing. When police arrived they found the iPhone, with its screen smashed, in the suspect’s pocket. He was given a ride to jail, where they have restrooms readily available.

A tad late
Burglars broke into a 24th Ave. S.W. home on Feb. 21, only to find it vacant and mostly barren of goods to steal. The victim, who checks on the house periodically, told police his brother was growing marijuana inside the home but had stopped the operation recently.

Crimes reported from Feb. 25 – March 3

Police Blotter Week of 2-25-13

Kids robbing kids
On Feb. 13 police responded to a fight call on the 4500 block of Delridge Way S.W. It was reported that five juveniles were fighting with each other. Police arrived to investigate and discovered the melee was a spillover from an armed robbery the day before. The victim in that robbery told police his friend is a marijuana dealer and that they went to meet with another teen to sell a half ounce. They went to a park near a church on the 5700 block of Delridge Way S.W. (which police said is a “gang member hangout and also known for narcotic sales”). Once there, the supposed buyer said he would not buy the weed unless it was purple. The dealer broke the bud open to show purple color inside. Another teen stepped out of the woods with a shotgun at that point and robbed the dealer and his friend of their belongings, including electronics and drugs. Back to the melee the next day, police were able to detain their suspected robber, who requested a lawyer back at the precinct. Police talked with the suspect’s mother, who said she was aware her son was involved with a gang and was not surprised he was suspected in a robbery. When police asked the victims of the robbery why they didn’t call police after the incident, one replied, “They (the robbers) did not do anything wrong robbing a couple kids selling weed, what can you do? The cops aren’t going to do anything.”

Safeway becomes a safe house
As midnight approached on Feb. 13, a woman was walking home alone from a Junction bar to her Fauntleroy Way abode when she felt a hand on her right shoulder. She turned around and came face-to-face with a black male, about 6 feet tall wearing a gray ski mask and black jacket. The man pointed a “large” handgun at her and demanded she put her belongings on the ground. The victim began screaming and never stopped, running into a nearby Safeway about a block away. A witness saw the incident and reported when the victim began screaming, the suspect ran the other way. She did not drop any of her belongings. Police searched the area but were unable to track their suspect.

Not a chance
Just after 1 p.m. on Feb. 22, a neighbor saw someone trying to break down the rear door of a house on the 5000 block of 35th Ave. S.W. and called 911. Police responded and set up containment around the house. An officer and sergeant approached the front door just as the suspect was walking out, forcing a detour into his escape route to a south gate that lead into Camp Long. The 24-year-old male ran into another officer along his revised route. He was successfully detained and booked into King County Jail for investigation of burglary.
Police Blotter Week of 2-18-13

Census Bureau scam
During the day of Feb. 7, a family’s home was burglarized on the 5600 block of 42nd Ave. S.W. while they were away at work. When police arrived to file a report, the victim said he had received two recent phone calls from someone claiming to be from the Census Bureau. The man said he was “put off by some peculiar questions about he and his wife’s work schedules when they were away from home.” His suspicions were likely correct. The victim had record of both calls with “206” area codes. Police took the numbers down for further investigation.

Karmic fail: Stealing tips
Sometime overnight on Feb. 10, an unknown burglar broke into a restaurant on the 4700 block of California Ave. S.W. The crook somehow made entry through the roof (the victim said it would be very difficult to get up there) and slipped down into the establishment through a “very small” hole into the kitchen. Once inside, the suspect stole receipts and the hard-earned tips of the staff. Responding officers were able to obtain a unique boot print from a wooden board that had been, at one time, in the ceiling. The print was taken as evidence.

Don’t pay: get your foot rolled over by a van?
A man called police on Feb. 12 to report his foot had just been ran over by a disgruntled “Water Department” employee’s van. The man, living on 46th Ave. S.W., told police he noticed city employees shutting off the water to his residence, so he ran outside and confronted them. He said he disagreed with their assumption that they had a right to turn off his water, and believed he had paid his bill. He said an Asian female employee around 50 years old left the conversation and took off in her van, “rolling over his ankle” in the process. The victim said he yelled, but the woman did not stop. Police called Seattle Public Utilities to inquire and SPU said no work orders or service crews were in the victim’s area that day. The man refused medical treatment, but said he believed the injury would swell up in the next few days.

Bad spot
A young man was assaulted and robbed on the 5600 block of California Ave. S.W. for the second time in a month, according to police. When they arrived, the victim had facial swelling and minor lacerations. He told police a girl called him that evening and said she wanted to meet up. He told her he had to go to work, which he did, so she showed up at his job and asked him to step outside so they could talk. As they conversed, two males in their teens approached and said, “Give me your phone,” before hitting him in the face. The victim attempted to run away, but they caught up, hit him several more times and obtained the phone. After the assault, he noticed the girl had disappeared. The victim believed the girl was in on the robbery, setting him up for the attack.

Reported crimes from 2/11 to 2/14:

Robberies by block: 5200 26th Ave. S.W., 9400 35th Ave. S.W., 4100 S.W. Edmunds St.

Police Blotter Week of 2-11-13

I don’t have time for this
A few weeks back on Jan. 31, a woman was walking on 15th Ave. S.W. towards S.W. Roxbury St. shortly before 7 a.m. when she got an uneasy feeling as two men halted their conversation and became quiet as she approached. She decided to cross the street to avoid a close encounter, but one of the men intercepted her at an angle. The woman told police she told the man, “I don’t have time for this (expletive), leave me alone,” to which the suspect laughed, popped open an umbrella he was carrying to distract his victim, and then grabbed the shoulder strap of her bag. A struggle ensued as the suspect attempted to pull the woman by the strap to the sidewalk. She turned her head briefly and saw the other man coming towards her. Springing into action, the woman said she grabbed her assailant by the jacket and pushed him back, knocking him off balance. Not quite finished, she stomped on his foot and hit him square in the face with an open palm, causing the suspect to let go of the strap, grab his face and say, “Oh.” She ran to the bus stop and was able to board a bus that had just arrived. The man who grabbed the purse strap is described as a light-skinned unknown race male around 5’10 with a slight build. He was wearing a black nylon jacket with a pink shirt underneath, carrying a large “golf-style” umbrella, and was missing a front tooth on the right side. The other suspect was an unknown race male wearing a red jacket with black shoulders and a dark “Elmer Fudd-style” hat. The victim told police she feared the men would attempt retribution for their failed robbery attempt and her successful self-defense.

Not boyfriend material
On Feb. 2, a woman living in an apartment complex on the 3000 block of S.W. Bradford St. awoke around 4:30 a.m. to noise in her living room. Using the light emanating from her phone as a flashlight, she investigated and discovered a man crouched down next to her bookshelf looking directly at her. The man apparently fled at that time, the woman called police, and responding officers found their suspect on the fourth floor of the complex. The suspect told police he had just been kicked out of his girlfriend’s apartment and said he had keys to the unit. The woman told police that not only was the man certainly not her boyfriend, but she had never seen him before. He was arrested and taken to King County Jail.

Reported crimes from Feb. 4 - Feb. 10:
Police Blotter Week of 2-4-13

Get off of my cloud
A husband and wife were driving along in late January when the woman pulled out her iPhone and realized her contacts had been erased, and replaced with names she did not know. She called Apple support and they told her that the changes must have been made to her laptop, which is connected to the phone through a data “cloud.” When the couple returned to their 46th Ave. S.W. home they discovered the woman’s MacBook Pro laptop was stolen, along with her husband’s iPad. The woman called a (redacted) name on the new contact list to inquire if they knew anything about the theft. The male on the other end was of no help.

Brutal beating; no leads
Police and paramedics were called to an apartment on the 5600 block of California Ave. S.W. on Jan. 25 after a man came to visit his friend and found him severely beaten. Both of the victim’s eyes were nearly swollen shut and he had significant facial bruising along with defensive cuts and bruises to his arms. There was dried blood in several rooms of the apartment. The victim told police he had absolutely no recollection of being beaten or who was involved. The friend who initially called 911 told police he came over because the victim had said someone broke in and robbed him. Police gathered photographs of a boot tread marking left in a pool of blood, and gathered three bottles of vodka for fingerprint analysis.

Fruitless effort
Unknown suspects broke into a completely empty home on the 7700 block of 11th Ave. S.W. on Jan. 24 that is currently being remodeled. They broke a back bedroom window, crawled in, turned on a few lights, and the burglary alarm went off. A neighbor called police and investigating officers arrived shortly to find the house empty (of everything, including suspects). The homeowner said nothing was stolen.
Police Blotter Week of 1-28-13

Robbed on the bus
It was Jan. 23, around 5:30 p.m., when a man minding his own business, listening to music on his headphones, and riding Metro’s Rt. 120 bus realized someone was sitting behind him where only moments before the seat was empty. The suspect, who came from the rear of the bus, asked the man about his headphones before ripping them off his head, and then reached over the seat to steal the victim’s MP3 music player. The victim started to turn around but was told to stop. The suspect claimed he had a handgun pointed at the victim’s back (through the seat), and told him “not to do anything stupid.” The suspect (no description given) and an acquaintance got off the bus at the 8800 block of 25th Ave. S.W.

Robbed at the store
Shortly after 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 a man walked into a convenience store on the corner of 35th Ave S.W. and S.W. Roxbury St., pulled a 9mm handgun out, pointed it at the clerk’s groin and said, “Everything in the till.” The victim, whose wife was in the back of the shop unaware, gave the suspect $200 before the crook fled northbound on foot. Police were checking surveillance cameras for a good look at their suspect who was described as a black male with light complexion, 25 to 35 years old, 5 foot, 9 inches, thin build, with freckles on the top parts of his cheeks and wearing a black beanie and black puffy coat. The suspect wore a bandana that covered the bottom half of his face.

Keep an eye out
As you peruse pawn and other jewelry-purchasing shops in the coming weeks, keep an eye out for a pair of chandelier-style, clear rhinestone earrings, a silver ring with “Carpe Diem” engraved on the top and a bone-colored bracelet engraved with “I’d rather be in Paris.” Someone broke into a home on the 4700 block of 35th Ave. S.W. on Jan. 21 and stole the unique jewelry along with a Macbook Pro computer.

Too close for comfort
On Jan. 27 around 1:15 p.m. a blue Chevy Blazer (or similar SUV type) pulled up to a house on the 7300 block of 32nd Ave S.W. and fired at least five gunshots at the residence. The shots hit a fence post, tree branch, the front door and living room window. Two bullets made their way into the home, but an adult male and female inside were not hit. An area search for the SUV and it’s unknown occupants didn’t turn anyone up, but police continue to investigate.

Reported crimes from Jan. 21 - 27
Robberies by block: 9400 35th Ave. S.W., 9200 29th Ave. S.W., 8800 25th Ave. S.W., 2600 California Ave. S.W., 6900 Delridge Way S.W.

Police Blotter Week of 1-21-13

Served Up
On the evening of Jan. 14 police were called to Hamilton Viewpoint above Alki to investigate an assault. By the time the reporting officer arrived, the victim was being loaded into an ambulance with facial bruising and bleeding indicating a beating. The 911 call came from three males standing nearby who insisted they had not seen what happened, but called police when they saw the victim on the ground. One of the men admitted the victim was his friend from high school and that he had seen him get into a verbal argument with a “big stocky white dude,” but said he was “away” when the assault occurred. The officer went straight to the source, asking the victim what happened before he was taken away by medics. The man “scornfully” told authorities he had caused the damage himself, leading the officer to remind him if he filed the report that way, the victim would be responsible for paying all ambulance and hospital fees. The victim first said, “Okay” but shortly after his wife arrived on scene and told police she heard a very different story. After a brief conversation with her spouse, the man admitted “I got served up,” but could not provide additional details on who was responsible.

The repercussion of a tow
A man living on S. Director St. in South Park called police on Jan. 13 to report someone kicked down his front door, but didn’t take a thing from the house. When asked why someone might kick down his door, the man said earlier in the day he looked outside and saw a Honda fully blocking his driveway. He called police and a tow truck came to haul it away. Later, a neighbor confronted the man to say her family member’s car had been towed, and then asked if he knew anything about it. He told her he called in the tow and the female retaliated with “vague threats” about damaging his property in return. Police paid the woman a visit. She claimed she had nothing to do with the door, but maintained she was still very angry about the tow.

Mysterious stabbing
In the early morning hours of Jan. 20, police responded to a “possible stabbing” call at the intersection of Delridge Way S.W. and S.W. Kenyon St. When they arrived, the place was deserted. The victim called 911 again, this time from the new location of 22nd Ave S.W. and Delridge (13 blocks to the north). Police headed to the new location and found their victim with a wound to his lower back. The man claimed the assault occurred at Delridge and Kenyon, but said he waited 15 minutes before calling 911 and then refused to provide any information on the assailant. No evidence was found at either location. Medics responded and took the man to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police Blotter Week of 1-14-13

Light bulbs and useless paperwork
On Dec. 30, someone broke into a condominium storage shed on the 200 block of Harbor Ave S.W. and stole $600 dollars worth of light bulbs and boxes of condo association records. The records contained no personal information on tenants, nor were there any blank checks inside.

Layers of defense
An unknown burglar failed in his attempt to access a home on the 8400 block of 12th Ave S.W. on Dec. 30. Around 11 a.m., someone used a concrete block to break the window of a sun porch, gaining access and unlocking the outside door to the area. Once inside the sun porch, the burglar likely realized the next door – the one leading into the home – was secured with metal bars. Nothing was missing from the sun porch and the armored door was left alone.

Stealing beautification supplies
On Dec. 31, workers at the non-profit White Center Community Development Association discovered their storage shed had been broken into. The unknown criminal(s) stole “Spring Clean” supplies, including paint rollers, trash cans and awnings. Spring Clean is a yearly volunteer-driven event to clean up the streets and parks of White Center.

Wallet thief
Around the New Year, a woman waiting for a bus on the 9200 block of Delridge Way S.W.was killing time by looking through her wallet when a female suspect walked up behind her, grabbed the wallet, and ran southbound into White Center. The victim told police she knew the woman’s first name and that she was known to frequent the streets in that area.

Burglary follows passing
In early January, someone burglarized the home of a recently deceased woman on 34th Ave S.W. The mother’s children were in town due to her recent passing and had their personal belongings stolen, along with their mother’s TV and miscellaneous jewelry. A neighbor reported seeing a small red compact car backed into the victims’ driveway at a glance, but by the time she looked back it was gone.

The following crimes were reported from Jan. 7 through Jan. 13:

Robberies by block: 5200 California Ave S.W., 4300 S.W. Hudson St., 9200 15th Ave S.W.

Burglaries by block: 3700 S.W. 104th St., 7300 31st Ave S.W., 7900 11th Ave S.W., 5600 29th Ave S.W., 4500 California Ave S.W., 3900 S.W. Charlestown St., 3300 30th Ave S.W., 3000 California Ave S.W., 4400 35th Ave S.W., 4700 California Ave S.W., 8400 20th Ave S.W., 9200 11th Ave S.W., 1400 S.W. Cambridge St., 9000 9th Ave S.W., 7100 Fauntleroy Way S.W., 10400 41st Ave S.W., 8700 16th Ave S.W.

Car prowls by block: 2600 S.W. Barton St., 8000 Fauntleroy Way S.W., 3800 45th Ave S.W., 10700 35th Ave S.W., 8100 8th Ave S.W.

Vehicle thefts by block: 7800 Detroit Ave S.W., 4500 38th Ave S.W., corner of S.W. Barton St./11th Ave S.W., 2700 46th Ave S.W., 11400 37th Ave S.W., 9000 13th Ave S.W., 2100 45th Ave S.W., 3800 Beach Dr. S.W.
Police Blotter Week of 1-7-13

All that for a Pepsi?
On Dec. 24 someone broke into a home on the 3100 block of S.W. Graham St. through a kitchen window. While an urn containing ashes was moved from a bedroom dresser and a jewelry box was rifled through, nothing appeared to be missing. The only missing item, in fact, was a bottle of Pepsi soda from the refrigerator.

Silenced gun proclaimed in robbery
It was early evening the day after Christmas when a man waiting for a bus at the corner of Delridge Way S.W. and S.W. Thistle St. was approached by an unknown male. The suspect came in very close and told the victim he had a gun, and then asked if he wanted to die. The victim handed over an iPod, cash and a debit card, but the suspect was not done. He said his gun was equipped with a silencer and told the victim to come with him or he would be shot. The victim told police he believed he was being led to at ATM for more cash, but that he was able to step away from the gunman, at which time the suspect ran away eastbound on Thistle. Police arrived with a K-9 unit and set up a containment area in hopes of finding their suspect, but he was long gone. The police report mentioned a distinctive jacket worn by the suspect, but the details on that jacket were redacted from the report.

Gifts stolen from under the tree
On Dec. 24, shortly after 9 p.m., a woman on the 8800 block of 29th Ave S.W. saw two young males running from her neighbor’s home with their arms full of items. They were described as “Pacific Islander, 20’s, long pony tails and wearing long white t-shirts and shorts” in the police report, and hopped into a turquoise Ford Crown Victoria before fleeing the scene. The woman walked next door, saw her neighbor’s front door had been kicked off the hinges, and called police. It appeared the suspects were rushed in their crime, leaving several expensive electronics (clearly in sight) alone, opting instead to steal wrapped gifts from under the Christmas tree. The most expensive gift stolen was a $300 DVD player. A bottle of vodka was moved close to the front door, but left on the ground inside. Police took the bottle for fingerprint analysis.

Reported crimes from Dec. 31 to Jan. 6:

Roxbury St, 3300 30th Ave S.W., 6300 Fauntleroy Way S.W., 8100 Delridge Way S.W., 8500 Fauntlee Crest S.W.

Car prowls by block: 3000 S.W. Charlestown St, 2100 S.W. Barton St, 4500 42nd Ave S.W., 8400 25th Ave S.W., 8000 Fauntleroy Way S.W.

Police Blotter Week of 12-31-12

**Happy New Year everyone, here's to a safe, productive and happy 2013! Thank you for checking out the Police Blotter and other Herald news. We greatly appreciate your support of local journalism** - Ty Swenson

“I have an emergency!”
Around 6 p.m. on Dec. 17 a woman was waiting at a bus stop near the corner of Delridge Way S.W. and S.W. Trenton St. when she was approached by a man who asked if she had change for a $20. She declined, and kept an eye on him as he sauntered away, noticing him stop to talk with another man down the block. Soon, the second man walked up to her and proclaimed, “I need to use your phone, I need to call my wife! I have an emergency!” She declined the second request, and the suspect responded, “I’ll hurt you if you don’t give it to me!” The victim held out her phone, hoping not to be attacked, and the suspect took it. As he walked away, the suspect continued to assure the victim he was just calling his wife … until he was out of sight. No other descriptors were given, but the suspect was wearing a NASCAR jacket with red piping and a large DUPONT patch on the back.

Lost, found, lost again
On Dec. 7 a woman saw someone crawling out of her neighbor’s window shortly after 1 p.m. on the 7500 block of 34th Ave S.W., prompting her to call 911. When police arrived they found a broken window and a trail of jewelry and coins leading from the backyard through an apartment complex on 35th Ave S.W. Police searched for their suspect but were unable to track her/him down. A few hours later, a man living a block away from the burglary called 911 to report he found a towel in his yard filled with jewelry and wristwatches. Instead of waiting for the police to arrive and collect the evidence (which seemed to match up), he placed the towel and stolen property on his front porch and left. By the time police arrived, the evidence had disappeared.

Finders are not always keepers
It was a little after 10 p.m. on Dec. 5 when a man living in an apartment on the 9200 block of 16th Ave S.W. left his place briefly to park his vehicle in a better spot. Only gone for a few minutes, he left his front door unlocked. As the man started walking up the stairs to his place he came face-to-face with a man and woman whose arms were loaded up with his personal belongings. The burglars took off and the victim gave chase, eventually catching up with the female who had a laptop, TV and clothes in two bags. As he ripped the bags from the burglar’s possession she yelled that it was her stuff and he should let go. He did not, as it was his stuff. The other suspect got away with some lesser items.

Reported crime from Dec. 20-28:

Robberies by block: 6500 35th Ave S.W., 6900 Delridge Way S.W., corner of Delridge Way S.W./S.W. Thistle St.

Police Blotter Week of 12-17-12

New apartment complex looted
A recently-opened apartment complex on the 4600 block of 36th Ave S.W. was burgled overnight between Dec. 8 and Dec. 9, and the crooks made away with a lot of loot. It appeared unknown suspect(s) broke into the building through a service door in the shared alleyway with a retirement community. Once inside, they broke into the main office and stole the master keys (which would open every door in the complex, forcing the owner to rekey the entire building), tenant records (including social security numbers), and several Visa gift cards. Once done with the office, the burglars moved into the common areas, stealing furniture and electronics. A dolly/cart was found in the parking garage below, indicating the thieves may have loaded up a vehicle with large items before making their getaway. Police were busy checking nearby surveillance footage and talking with residents of the retirement community for clues in the case.

False friend
A man called police on Dec. 5 to report he was burglarized by a woman he thought was a new friend. The victim met a woman in treatment (specific type not listed) and said they spent an afternoon together. When he stepped out of his car for an unknown errand she stayed with the vehicle. When he came back outside she was gone, along with his $20. He checked his cell phone and discovered the woman had used it to call a cab. By the time he arrived home to his apartment on the 5400 block of 25th Ave S.W., he discovered someone had burglarized his place as well. He believed the woman stole from him for the sake of drug money.

Cigarette theft leads to melee
The employee at a convenience store on the 8900 block of 14th Ave S. in South Park reported that on Dec. 9 two young males walked in shortly after 10 p.m. One of them came up to the counter and asked the employee questions while his buddy reached around the back and grabbed three cartons of cigarettes. The smoke thief ran out of the store, but his friend working the distraction was not as quick. The victim was able to grab him “with a bear hug style around both of his legs,” rendering the suspect immovable. The cigarette thief, realizing his friend was caught, returned and started kicking the clerk in the arm, shoulder and back until he released his grip. The victim declined medical attention and said the cartons were worth close to $300.00.

Guns stolen from home
A man discovered three firearms and ammunition were stolen from his basement on 39th Ave S.W. sometime from Dec. 1 to Dec. 4. Someone got into the home through unknown means and stole two .22 caliber rifles and one pump shotgun from a gun locker. The victim said several much more expensive firearms were left in the locker, and nothing else was stolen.

Of all the choices … Jägermeister?
Shortly after 1 a.m. on Dec. 2, three unknown suspects shattered the front door of a Westwood Village liquor store, climbed in through the broken glass and stole three bottles of Jägermeister liquor, an adult version of black licorice. The suspects were gone by the time police arrived, but surveillance footage showed a vehicle pulling up to the store with the suspects shining their headlights on the front doors. Three suspects (gender unknown) broke the door and two entered. They appeared to make a straight line for the Jägermeister and then fled. One bottle of the viscous brown sludge didn’t make it out and was found shattered on the business floor.

Junction business hit again
For the second time in a thirty day period, a restaurant/bar on the 4700 block of California Ave S.W. was broken into … likely by the same criminal. The owner locked the place up and left by 3:20 a.m. on Dec. 2, and received a call from his alarm company only minutes later that the system had been tripped. He turned around and returned, then saw the same vehicle he saw in the last burglary parked a half-block away from his business. The car was running and a man jumped in before the driver took off. The suspect tried to get in through the same vent he did last time, but was unable to get past a wooden board put up to repair his last caper. Instead, it appeared he made a hole in the front door and crawled inside, stealing between $800 and $1,000 in cash.

Valuables stolen as neighbor watches
The neighbor of an elderly victim living on 13th Ave S.W. watched around 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 30 (Friday) as three young males walked onto the property and knocked on the front door. No one answered and the neighbor watched the men walk to the side yard, disappear, and reappear minutes later to stash something near a shed in the backyard. The neighbor, in his 60s, walked over to confront the suspects at that time. One of them told him “not to take his accusations any further,” according to the police report, then left. When the 90-year-old victim returned home he discovered a suitcase containing a hearing aid, personal papers and $6,000 in cash was missing. The suitcase was found stashed next to the shed, but the money was gone. Suspect #1 was described as a Filipino male, 17 to 19 years old, 5 feet 8 inches and heavy set with scruffy facial hair and a flat-billed baseball cap. Suspect #2 was described as a black male, same age, 5 feet 11 inches with a thin build, short hair, dark coat and black denim jeans. Suspect #3 was described as a Pacific Islander male, same age, 6 feet tall with a thin build, ear-length black hair and wearing Bermuda shorts with yellow on one side and red on the other.

Another open house scout?
On Nov. 15 a TV was stolen from a vacant home on 45th Ave S.W. and the real estate agent listing the home suspected two women who attended a recent open house event. Ten days later, a home for sale on the 1000 block of California Ln. S.W. was ransacked as well, and the real estate agent told police she recalled a “recent lookie-loo” (white male in his thirties with dark hair, driving a maroon Acura) she showed the house to who gave her “the creeps.” A window was used to access the home and the agent wondered if someone might have unlocked the window during a showing.

Late night restaurant burglary
Two hours after closing time on Nov. 24, the owner of a restaurant on the 4700 block of California Ave S.W. received a call from his alarm company that the warning system had gone off. The owner arrived before police and saw a brown Dodge four-door sedan leaving the alley in a hurry after a six-foot tall man ran to the vehicle and hopped inside. The owner followed the vehicle as it tore through the alley, turned left on S.W. Edmunds St., and then northbound onto California Ave.. The vehicle reached an estimated 60 miles per hour as the owner followed, and then slowed down and pulled into a gas station on the 3900 block of S.W. Alaska St. The owner pulled over and got the license plate number, then returned to his restaurant to meet up with police. It appeared the suspects broke in through a side door and stole cash from tills and bottles of cognac and vodka from the bar. Police continue to investigate.

Ukulele turned weapon
On Nov. 28 a white male and white female in their early 20’s walked into a gas station near the corner of Delridge Way S.W. and S.W. Myrtle St. with plans to heist a six-pack of Olde English malt liquor. A store employee saw the theft in progress and told the suspects to put the beer back, followed by a threat to call police. The male suspect hit the clerk over the head with a ukulele (small guitar-like instrument), shattering it and seriously cutting the victim. The suspects fled the scene and the victim was taken to Highline Hospital for treatment. Police are still looking for the suspects and encourage tipsters to call the Seattle Police Robbery Unit at (206) 684-5540 with any information on the case.

Home alone
Right around noon on Nov. 15, a woman was sleeping in her upstairs bedroom on the 6300 block of 36th Ave S.W. when she woke with a start to loud banging. Working her way out of the layers of sleep, the woman initially thought she was hearing a passing truck or nearby construction, then realized it was someone banging loudly on her front door. She activated her home alarm and decided to confront the situation. Just as she started walking down the stairs someone broke one of her front windows. She yelled out that she was calling the police and moments later heard a vehicle speed away. When police arrived, the victim told police she had a firearm in the house for just this kind of situation.

Witnessed, but not caught
Shortly after 2 p.m. on Nov. 16, a woman living on 8100 block of 31st Ave S.W. witnessed two suspicious people pull up to a neighbor’s house in a silver BMW with Washington plates. A male, described as white in his 20’s, 6 foot tall, 170 pounds with a scruffy beard and dark hair, exited the driver seat while a female stayed in the car and lit up a cigarette. The neighbor watched the suspect walk around the house until he disappeared behind some bushes at which time she called the police non-emergency line. Around that time the female in the getaway car noticed the neighbor watching, got into the driver’s seat and drove away westbound on S.W. Elmgrove St. By the time police arrived the male suspect was also gone, along with a Macbook Pro Laptop and a box of coins.

Open house scouting
On the afternoon of Nov. 15, a Realtor® called police to report a vacant home on the 9300 block of 45th Ave S.W. had been burglarized. It appeared someone broke the lockbox of the front door, went directly to a bedroom and stole a 32 inch Panasonic flat screen television. Discussing potential suspects with police, the realtor remembered “two susp
