See a Mariners game and support WSHS Baseball too

The West Seattle Wildcats being in the state playoffs for the first time is big news but the Wildcats need more support.

They are selling tickets to the Monday, June 3rd Mariners game against the Chicago, White Sox. The game starts at 7:10 pm and the price per ticket is $10.

Over the last 4 years the team has partnered with the Mariners to sell 1,000 tickets to a designated ballgame. In return, each Spring, the team has had the privilege to play against another area high school team at Safeco Field.

The team needs to sell 200 tickets by Friday, May 31st. If they fall short of this goal they will lose the opportunity to play at Safeco Field for many years or possibly forever because there is a long waiting list and only a handful of schools get to participate in this program each year. If the current participating schools continue to sell the allotted number of tickets each year they continue to participate in the program, if they don't they are placed at the bottom of the list.

For tickets please contact Gina Coats at (206) 779-9793.

Thank you for supporting the West Seattle High School Baseball Team.
UPDATE: West Seattle Wildcats win 3-1; Headed to state championship

This morning in Southeast Washington the fur flew when the Wildcats of West Seattle defeated the Mount Si Wildcats 3-1 and advance to the final game of the WIAA 3A State Baseball championship.

West Seattle has never advanced this far in team history. They did it today on the strong pitching arm of senior Sam Hellinger and freshman shortstop Morgan McCullough’s standout defense. Hellinger is a member of the Seattle Times All Area Team for 2013 and McCulluogh is the 2013 recipient of the Josh Dickerson Inspirational Award.

West Seattle struck first when in the top of the first Spencer Elder was advanced to second base on a baulk. That brought up Sam Hellinger who took a first pitch deep to right field for a stand up double. Elder was held on third and the Wildcats and runners in scoring position. Next batter up was Tim Adams who took a 2-0 pitch just past the second baseman for an RBI single and West Seattle jumped out to 2-0 lead and would never look back.

The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the fifth when leadoff hitter Morgan McCulluogh blasted a double bagger. Spencer Elder hit a deep dribbler up the first base line that forced the Mt Si pitcher to take the easy out at first allowing McCullough to stand up at third. Hellinger was next at the plate. He hit the ball sharply towards first base and again forcing the play at first allowed McCulluogh to score and that was all that West Seattle needed.

Mount Si threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Hollinger’s throw to first base went wide and allowed a Mount Si runner to score but that would be all the runs the other Wildcats would muster.

Hellinger went the distance on the mound using his pitches effectively allowing six hits, one run, and four K’s. Surprisingly neither pitcher had a walk in the game.

The Wildcats will face Auburn Mountain View (who defeated Kennewick 6-4 in the afternoon game) tomorrow at 4 pm for all of the marbles.
It was looking like West Seattle was going to face Kennewick, leading Auburn 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth AMV exploded with a five run inning and held on to win 6-4.

In an odd sports note the morning game was between two teams with “Wildcats” as their moniker and the afternoon game was between two “Lions” teams.

You can view an on demand video of the game through the PlayOnSports website here:
A look back: 2013 CSIHS spring sports season recap

By Sam Reed
Athletic Director/Activity Coordinator
Chief Sealth International High School

Last spring I led my season recap by saying that it was “my belief that the ‘12 spring sports season at Chief Sealth International High School will be one that sets a new standard for excellence and success.”
That statement proved true this year, as our athletes turned out in droves this spring, driven by high expectations. Led by a strong senior class, 254 student-athletes donned Seahawk apparel and demonstrated the “Sealth pride” that’s now come to be expected. Now, as this season and year comes to a close, it’s difficult to conger up the words to express what this group of seniors has meant to the school and to the athletic programs they’ve participated in. While it will be hard to see them go, the list of successes of all below should help demonstrate the strength of the program they’re leaving behind.

Let’s begin on the diamond where head coach Ernest Policarpio and the boys baseball team finished 4th in the Metro Sound Division (9-14 overall) and headed into the playoffs playing their best ball of the season. After an extra inning loss to Eastside Catholic and a clean win over Nathan Hale, the boys saw their season come to an end in a 4-1 loss to Seattle Prep. Seniors Max Sarver (1st team all-league), Michael Hafermann, Marley Lucas (2nd team) and others now turn the reigns over to a team that will be led next season by Izac Bauer (2nd team), Merle Rowan-Kennedy and Blaine Steele (both honorable mention).

Moving across the diamond, the softball team and head coach Mike Depew have established something of a Metro Sound Division dynasty, as they finished off their 2nd consecutive undefeated division title (17-7 overall). The team finished 4th in the Metro League tournament before falling to Mercer Island in Districts. All-league honors went to seniors Malia Dewey, Chloe Behar (1st team all-league), Corie Schwinger and Alana Sullivan (1st team all-division) , and sophomores Sophie Boyd, and Megan Hafermann (1st team all-division).

When building a program, the numbers usually come first, the success later. The ’13 tennis team continues to grow at a record pace, add this year added another division championship to our spring collection. Led by new head coach Alex Kattar, the varsity team finished 4th in Metros and advanced ten individuals into the league tournament. Outstanding sophomore Maria Nguyen made her way back into the District tournament for the 2nd straight year, while captain Andry Xevandry received the prestigious Jill Curan Award, given annually to the Metro League tennis player who shows the greatest display of teamwork and sportsmanship.

The track and field team, led by head coaches Lorna Considine and Asosa Sailiai, had perhaps their most well-rounded team in recent memory. The team received contributions and scored points in nearly every event this season, and was paced by a strong group of jumpers, throwers and distance runners. Senior Vidal Griffin II is headed to State this weekend in both the Triple Jump and High Jump, while sophomore Lorna Sailiai will be headed there as well, as she qualified in Discus for the 2nd straight year.

Once again it was the boys soccer team capturing the attention of many, both in the school and statewide. Head coach Ron Johnson earned his 2nd consecutive Metro Coach of the Year honors, as he and Metro Sound Division MVP Xahil McDonald led a veteran roster to a undefeated division season (13-3-3 overall), a 3rd place finish in the Metro League Tournament and their 2nd straight trip to the State tournament. The team was featured in The Seattle Times and spent most of the season ranked #1 or #2 in the state rankings. The all-league teams was peppered with Seahawks, including McDonald, Kristian Nilssen, Mori Tsuchiya, Devon Offord, Paal Nilssen, Elijiah Lazo, Ben Lee, Abdinur Galgalo, Eduardo Cardoza (1st team all-division), Rafael San Pablo, Sean Umeda, Tore Kelln, Anthony Masundire, and Joe Thayer (2nd team).

There’s another soccer team that deserves recognition this spring. Our Special Olympics Unified Soccer team, now in its third year of existence, has established itself as a model program both in the District and at the state level. Led by coaches Don Freitas and Andrew Saldana, the team – comprised of both students with and without mental disabilities – will be headed to its second consecutive Special Olympics State Games in June as recently sent a student, Christian Freitas, to Costa Rica to compete as part of Team USA on the National Level.

Finally, I was excited to partner with Supersonics Lacrosse this season to form a JV-level lacrosse program. Under the leadership of Scott Pattison, a dedicated group of Seahawks and other area high school students laid the groundwork for a team – and a sport – that continues to gain interest. I look forward to seeing this program grow into a varsity-level team in the near future.

An accomplishment I am even more proud of though, is how our student-athletes have succeeded in the classroom. They are leaders not just on the field, but in the halls and in our community, in student government and music, and in some of the most challenging classes offered at Chief Sealth. Their success is proven by the strong team GPA’s turned in by our sports teams, led by varsity baseball (3.39 combined GPA), varsity soccer (3.3) and varsity softball (3.26). The majority of our graduating student-athletes are moving on to further education, and while some will be participating in athletics, all will be taking what they learned as a Seahawk with them, both in the classroom and in competition.

SLIDESHOW: Track finals see some talented West Seattle Athletes move on to state

The big winners of the day were the private schools, but the public schools performed well with local West Seattle talent moving on to the state finals next week in Tacoma.

West Seattle Highs DiAndre’ Jackson 23.05 time placed him third in the boys’ 200 meter dash. Chief Sealth’s Vidal Griffen III’s triple jump distance of 42’8” and Lorna Sailiai’s 1kg discus throw of 98’ landed the two Seahawks a solid two/three in their respective events and will send them to Tacoma as well.

The West Seattle Herald spoke with Vidal Griffen III briefly after his high jump event and while he missed on 6’ he was happy he maintained his personal best of 5’10”. Vidal finished with a 5th place height of 5’10”. Griffen III is excited about next year when he’ll be attending Whitworth University in hopes of playing basketball and running track.

Hats off to all of the competitors that participated at the SWAC. Over the last two weeks these athletes gave everything for their schools and themselves.

SLIDESHOW: Two run homer powers West Seattle into number three seed

After a devastating loss to Bainbridge Island to open the post season, the West Siders team game, that had eluded them against Bainbridge, showed up and the Wildcats put together a seven run inning against Ingraham and moved on with a 11-7 victory for the right to meet Eastside Catholic on Friday.

With a pitching duel apparent, and the Crusaders holding on to a one run lead coming into the top of the fifth Graham French #25 singles to bring Tim Adams in to tie the game 1-1. RBI’s by Sam Hellinger and Tim Adams in the sixth make the score 3-1 West Seattle. In the seventh Morgan McCullough’s single added another run getting #28 Ben Wexler across the plate and the game ended in a 4-1 West Seattle win. That left Seattle Prep Panthers on Saturday.

Prep got here by losing to Bainbridge Island on Wednesday. The Panthers had two days rest while the Wildcats needed to battle through the week. Sharpening their skills could be a way of looking at it. Getting comfortable with winning may be another.

Baseball is about being relaxed as much as having skills. Joking and kidding around is so important in a clubhouse that a team that’s too intense can make errors on the field. Baseball is Zen. Deep breath and focus. Relax and have fun. That’s what the Wildcats did before the game on Saturday. Joking and laughing, the boys in blue were almost lackadaisical in appearance in warm ups. That is Velko Vitalich’s way. Don’t be too serious, just have fun and enjoy the moment. But that belied their attitude once the first pitch was thrown. It was all business.

Seattle Prep is a good ball club. They have a fine bullpen, above par fielding, and smart hitters. That’s why they’re in the post season. When you go this deep in the playoffs that’s the type of team you’re going to face, but the Wildcats knew they were a good squad as well. Just relax, have fun, and play smart ball.
With the score tied 0-0 in the top of the fourth Panther infielder #13 Jack Roger hit an RBI single to put Prep on the board with a one run lead 1-0.That score would remain constant for the next inning and a half.
Relax, have fun, and play smart ball. Do these things and good stuff will happen.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Wildcat third baseman Morgan McCullough led off with a sharp single and West Seattle had the tying run 270 feet away. The Prep pitchers were very good all day keeping West Seattle’s on base percentage low but all it takes is one errant pitch to have a good effort collapse. That’s what happened when Sam Hellinger stepped up to the plate and took a fastball that was up in the zone and sent it into the playfield on the other side of the left field fence. The Panther left fielder took two steps and stopped, knowing any effort was futile. All he could do was watch it bounce among the monkey bars and slides. That two run bomb was all that was needed to propel West Seattle into the #3 seed at the state tournament.

After the game coach Vitalich talked about his team. “It’s nice to see them keep believing. My big guys came through big time” referring to Sam Hellinger and shortstop Morgan McCullough “Sam the man pitched an awesome game the day before to get us here and the defense at the end (that) the shortstop made, he’s made then all year. Morgan makes plays that nobody ever made”.

McCullough was honored after the game with the 2013 Josh Dickerson Inspirational Award. Named after O’Dea baseball star Josh Dickerson who passed after losing his battle with cancer. The award is given to the player that best exemplifies the spirit of continuing to live life in the face of adversary. Morgan lost his father in the fall but continued his focus for the sport he loves. As a freshman McCullough not only made the team but became a starter. His exemplary play on the field helped propel West Seattle into the #3 seed and a trip to Mt. Vernon this Saturday to play for the state title.

A visibly emotional Vitalich couldn’t say enough about this young man. “He’s unbelievable for us. He’s an inspirational kid in the way he plays and the way he acts. My dad died at fifty and it was harder than hell on me. I can’t imagine what it’s like on a fourteen year old kid”. Vitalich went on to say “He’s a ninth grader hitting leadoff (and) playing shortstop. Other coaches go what grade is he, is he a senior? Hoping he’s gone. I say no he’s a freshman, he’ll be around for three more years”.

A hand full of games is all that’s needed next week- Earn Everything- that’s the Wildcat way.
SLIDESHOW: Chief Sealth and West Seattle win at Steve Cox Park

In the early game at Mel Olsen Stadium the Chief Sealth Seahawks took control of the Raiders of Nathan Hale. After getting through a scoreless first inning the Seahawk put three runs on the board in the top of the second and never looked back. Steady pitching, as always, came from Marley Lucas. Lucas went the distance with seven steady innings allowing only one earned run and three “K’s” in a 6-4 win.

Lucas pitched himself, and the team, out of what could have been a disastrous seventh inning. With a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning and two outs Lucas got into trouble when he walked two batters to load the bases for Ingraham. But Lucas got the next batter to ground out to first baseman Mason Moe for the final out of the game. It was smiles all around for head coach Ernest Policarpio and his staff.

Coach Policarpio told this writer on the sly he hasn’t officially announced his starting pitcher but it would be his Knuckleballer Blaine Steele. “I really want to keep him (Steele) a secret from the private schools” said Policarpio. Obviously coach “P” thinks highly of tonight’s starter against Seattle Prep.

Sealth will play the late game against Seattle Prep tonight (Friday) at 7pm in the game ten bracket.

West Seattle Wildcats vs. Ingraham Rams

The second game of the day featured the Wildcats of West Seattle hosting the Ingraham Rams in a contest under the field lights at Mel Olsen Stadium.

The Cats got off to a shaky start when in the top of the first inning two errors allowed two runs to score for the rams. Starting pitcher “TK” Snow over threw first baseman Rex Lakey in an attempt to hold a Rams base runner. That allowed a Rams base runner to score from third. Then catcher Jimmy Mai had a ball get by him to let another run come in. West Seattle would get out of the inning but starting a playoff game down two runs is not where West Seattle head coach Velco Vitalich wanted his squad to be.

The Rams would pick up two more runs in the top of the second when Ingraham catcher Darby Blake blasted a shot that bounced off of the top of the right field fence and into the parking lot of an adjacent apartment complex for a two run homer. Snow would get out of the inning but the Wildcats headed into the dugout with a 4-0 deficit to overcome. West Seattle would pick up a run in the second and fourth inning but still found themselves down 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth. That’s when the offensive floodgates opened up for the Wildcats scoring two runs off Rams starting pitcher Scott Sieverson and five runs off Rams reliever Jason Vickers. Two more runs were added by West Seattle in the sixth and after a dubious start the Wildcats cruise to a 11-7 tournament win. One of the highlights of the game for West Seattle came in the bottom of the sixth when Morgan McCullough blasted a shot over the left fielder, who was playing shallow.

The ball rolled all the way to the fence and by the time the cutoff throw reached the infield McCullough was sliding into home base for a solo inside the park home run. Unfortunately there was a West Seattle lowlight when in the top of the sixth inning Wildcat third baseman Cameron Slader was run into by a Rams base runner. The play was legal but resulted in Cameron being carried off the field with a knee injury. The severity of the injury is unknown at this time. The Wildcats next game will be today (Friday) at Mel Olsen Field against the Crusaders of Eastside Catholic at 4pm in the game nine bracket.

If both Sealth and West Seattle win tonight’s games they will face each other Saturday in the game eleven bracket listing to determine the #3 and #4 Metro seeding’s. Good luck to both squads tonight.
SLIDESHOW: Sealth Ladyhawks refuse to lose and win 10-7

The measure of any contending team is the willingness to win no matter how bad things look. The Sealth softball team showed why they deserve to be in the post season.

Down 5-0 to the Panthers of Seattle Prep in the first inning the Lady Hawks all but shut down Prep over the next six innings of play to win an astounding come from behind victory and go into the next round of the Metro Playoffs as a team to be reckoned with.

Allowing one run in the second inning and another in the fourth, the Seahawks battled back to a 10-7 thrashing of Seattle prep on the pitching of Chloe Behar.

Behar recovered from the first inning to pitch a game that would impress any fan of softball. Throw out the first inning Behar gave up only runs while her team mates found their stride offensively and defensively. Behar contributed with her bat as well, hitting a two RBI home run in the third and a three RBI home run in the sixth inning to break a 7-7 tie and win the game 10-7.

Sealth will play their next post season game at the lower woodland Park Field tomorrow at 3:30 against the winner of today’s Bainbridge- Ingraham matchup.

SLIDESHOW: Evergreen girls hold off late rally by Foster to win 9-5 in softball

by Kurt Howard

Foster girls’ softball team played host to Evergreen on Friday, May 3rd for a Seamount Conference game played at Tukwila Community Center. This was the last regular season game for both teams. Foster came into the game with a 5-win, 8-loss conference record while Evergreen was at 3 wins and 10 losses. The first time these teams met, Foster won the contest over Evergreen, 11-6.

Evergreen was up to bat first. In that inning, they sent six batters to the plate and scored two runs.

In the bottom of the first inning Evergreen’s catcher and team captain, Pulemau Savusa threw out Foster’s Veronica Sun at second base and Alexia Barlow at third base for attempting to steal.

Coach Angeles commented on Foster’s speedster Alexia Barlow being thrown out. “I think when we threw her out it kind of set the tone. I don’t think they were quite as aggressive after that.” So if one play can change a team’s momentum, then that could have been it.

Evergreen would go on to score one run in the 2nd, two in the 5th, and four in the 6 th inning. Evergreen led by a score of 9-0 in the 6th before Foster even got on the board. Evergreen looked like they were in cruise control, doing the things they should, as Foster just didn’t seem to have an answer.

Well, it wasn’t until the bottom of the 6th inning that Foster got their momentum going. They were at the top of their batting order and things started clicking. They sent all nine of their players up to bat and scored 4 runs. Now this looked like a team that just would not go away quietly!

Evergreen did not score in the top of the 7th, but was Foster capable of a comeback win?

Again, Foster was at the top of their batting order, just where they wanted to be. But, to the dismay of the team and their fans, they were only able to score one run in that inning. Their comeback ended up being too little, too late as Evergreen defeated Foster by a score of 9-5.

Before the game, Coach Angeles told his pitcher Tori Mulitauopele, “If you throw strikes, we win!” Well, I guess he was spot on with that statement. He also told me, "Our team came out with some motivation because Foster is a little higher up in our league standings and they played well and I’m proud of them.”

It’s interesting to note that only one player on coach Angeles’ team has any real softball experience. That is left fielder Keiki Waiau, who has played at PacWest. That’s why it’s important for Evergreen to have a JV team, he said; it’s a good way to teach fundamentals before getting up to the varsity level.

“It’s been a fun year”, coach Angeles said. “This was our last league game and now we go to the sub-district tournament. I will be losing 5 or 6 seniors from this team so we’ll see what happens next year.”

Coach Angeles also had something to say about Foster's pitcher Veronica Sun. He knows her very well, because her family lived next door to him at one time. He remembers playing catch with Veronica and her sister Venseca when they were growing up. “She's a good pitcher and a good athlete”, added coach Angeles.

Foster’s coach Shauna Briggs has been with her team for five years. In the past, Foster has not had a winning record; last year they won only one game. They had to come up with other ways to have fun, so they focused on honoring the other teams, their opponents, and finding ways to focus on sportsmanship.

“At the beginning of the game, we all run over and give them snacks for coming,” coach Briggs said. “At the end of every home game, our girls have made ‘Player of the Game’ t-shirts for the other teams, just to honor them. They run over and call out whatever player our team voted on and give them the t-shirt.” No wonder the coaches from the other teams always say, you’re our favorite team to play. They feed them and honor them - nice!

Coach Briggs also commented on her center fielder, Alexia Barlow. “She's a cheerleader, with a big sparkly bow, who likes to roll around in the dirt. She is my only girl who can figure out the popup slide. Most of the time when the catcher throws down, she's already slid and popped up by the time the ball gets there.”

Thus ends another softball regular season with the playoffs about to begin. Both Foster and Evergreen qualified to play in the 2A Sub-District Softball Tournament to be held at Boise Creek Six-Plex in Enumclaw on Friday, May 10. Foster will play Franklin Pierce and Evergreen plays Fife, both games are scheduled at 4:00pm. Get out and support your team!

GREAT NEWS FOR FOSTER SOFTBALL! They have a brand new softball field. The first game to be played on their new field will be against Fife, on Wednesday, May 8th at 4pm. This game was scheduled so they could have a senior celebration on the new field, along with a BBQ following the game. Coach Briggs has been trying for five years to get a softball field, and now they finally have it.

SLIDESHOW: Spartan bats too hot for West Seattle

The afternoon was hot and cold for the division leading West Seattle Wildcats.

The normally hot pitching the Wildcats field went north to Alaska and took the bats and defense with them. Then a warm front moved onto Hiawatha Field. With the temperature rocketing to 87 degrees one had a hard time differentiating between mother nature and the heat wave that blew in from Bainbridge Island.

Scoring two runs in the second, four runs in the third, three in the fourth, and four more in the fifth the Spartans of Bainbridge Island blistered Wildcat pitching on an afternoon that was equally as hot. West Seattle starting pitcher Sam Hellinger lasted only three and a third giving up five runs. His relief could do no better. Three other Wildcat pitchers took the mound and gave up a total of eight runs and the Wildcats go down 13-0 in their first post season outing. The defense fared no better committing a bucket full of errors in an uncharacteristic performance.

At the center of the island heat wave was Spartan first baseman Tino Peleti. Peleti blasted two, two run homers accounting for thirty percent of Bainbridge’s offensive output. Both shots went over the head of the scrambling Tim Adams in deep right field. Peleti’s second shot in the fourth inning went into the fir trees north of the community building, a distance of approximately 400 feet.

All Adams could do was stand there and watch the ball disappear into the trees. Spartan right fielder Brett Green blasted a solo home run in the fifth inning that landed in nearly the same location in right field as Peleti’s, the only thing that right fielder Tim Adams could do, with arms at his side, was watch the ball vanish across the warning track.

Coach Velko Vitalich commented after the game; “They (Bainbridge) had a good game. We handled them earlier in the season”. That outcome was a 7-2 Wildcat win.

This by no means is the end of West Seattle’s post season. The Wildcats will play the Ingraham Rams in the game seven bracket on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
In other Westside baseball news the Chief Sealth Seahawks lost a close one to Eastside Catholic 4-3 and will face the Nathan Hale Raiders on Thursday in the game eight bracket at 8:00 pm
Evergreen holds off late rally by Foster to win 9-5 in softball

By Kurt Howard

Foster girl’s fastpitch team played host to Evergreen on Friday, May 3rd for a Seamount Conference game played at Tukwila Community Center.

This was the last regular season game for both teams. Foster came into the game with 5 win, 7 loss conference record while Evergreen was at 2 wins and 8 losses.

The first time these teams met Foster beat Evergreen 11-6. This game proved to be different from the start as Evergreen led by a score of 9-0 before Foster even got on the board.

But Foster did not give up and came roaring back in the bottom of the 6th inning as they scored 4 runs.

But their comeback ended up being too little, too late as Evergreen holds on and defeats Foster by a score of 9-5.

This story will be updated with more details and a full slideshow.

SLIDESHOW: Seahawks win annual Carne Asada Bowl in a shoot out

International High School and Chief Sealth High School took the match down to the wire as they faced off in the annual Carne Asada soccer match on Friday May 3.

Three minutes into the first half Alexis Zarate got the Seahawks on the board on a crossing in front of the goal for a 1-0 lead. At the 28 minute mark Sealth would score again from a shot by Mid-fielder Eric Swensen.

International High players fought hard throughout the first half. They were faster than the Seahawks and had more shots on goal than Sealth but were hindered by having to try and score into a stiff wind from the north. That would change for International in the second half. Attacking the south goal International was able to use their speed to get the ball down field quickly and put pressure on coach Ron Johnsons squad.

The ability to get the ball over the defense quickly paid off in the twelfth minute of the second half on a goal by Ricardo Hernandez when he got behind the defender for an unobstructed shot. Hernandez would score less than two minutes later on a similar type of play to tie the game at two all with twenty five minutes left in regulation.

Sealth had some opportunities in the second half but they had the same issues the International did trying to score into the heavy wind and at the end of regulation the score was 2-2 bringing up the shoot out.

Both teams made shots and missed shots but with Sealth ahead five shots to four Internationals number 14 Brayan Navarrete placed the ball on the ten yard line to take his shot, he stepped back and did a little fake to his left and shot to the right, but Sealth goalie Giovanni Barrios didn’t bite on the fake and gathered in the ball for the winning save. Sealth won the match 7-6 and took home the 2013 Carne Asada Bowl Trophy.

Hats off to coach Ron Johnson on the win but also to International head coach Juan Carlos Torres for getting his squad prepared for the game- a heck of a nice guy. Everyone will be looking forward to next years match.

SLIDESHOW: Major League Ulltimate game sees Rainmakers defeat Stags 18-12

In the second game of what is called Major League Ultimate played at the Southwest Athletic Complex the Seattle Rainmakers faced off against the Portland Stags Saturday night, April 27.

The game is new and a blend of team disc throwing, catching, and scoring. The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc to a player in the opponent's end zone, much like football. Players can't run with the disc, and must keep a pivot while holding it.

In Saturday's game, Cutter Reid Koss didn’t waste any time getting the Rainmakers on the board scoring a mere twenty seconds into the game on Saturday against the Portland Stags in front of a smaller crowd than last week.

But the fans were fervent and loud.

There were even tailgaters’ barbequing burgers and dogs in the upper parking lot before the game. Koss and crew would go on to defeat the Stag 18-12.

Seattle’s fast paced offense and their swift slashing defense is the reason the Rainmakers are in first place in the MLU Western Conference.

Next weekend Seattle travels down the coast to face their closest rival in the young season in the San Francisco Dogfish. The Dogfish, like the Rainmakers, are undefeated but trail Seattle in points scored.

For all of the weekends scores and highlights go to www.mlultimate.com

SLIDESHOW: Big fifth inning for West Seattle leads to win over Sealth

Getting off to a hot start Chief Sealth generated three runs in the first inning and one in the second to take a four nothing lead in the second game of the west side matchup between the Seahawks and the division leading West Seattle Wildcats. In the first matchup the Wildcats scored two runs and broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning to win 5-3.

Trying to keep their playoff hopes alive the Sealth Seahawks looked like they were going to split the series, but the Wildcats showed why they’re leading the division. Steady play, make few mistakes, and remain confident that the bats will show up. West Seattle head coach Velko Vitalich was not disappointed in the play of his squad. The Wildcats didn’t panic. That calm paid off when Wildcat bats came alive in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded #18 for West Seattle hits a base clearing RBI single to close the gap to 4-3. The Seahawks get out of the inning but the momentum was swinging towards West Seattle.

Trying to quell the momentum by West Seattle, Seahawk head coach Ernest Policarpio pulls starter Blaine Steele and inserts reliever Jake Eddy to the mound. Unfortunately Eddy struggled, loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning. That’s when Sam Hellinger #1 stepped up to the plate and hit a bases clearing RBI single that put the Wildcats up 6-3. Adding insult to injury later in the inning a throwing error to second base brought in another run to extend the West Seattle lead 7-4.

The one defensive highlight for Chief Sealth came in the fifth when #24 Tim Adams for West Seattle tipped his hand by taking too much of a lead off of third base. Showing he was going to attempt to steal home, reliever Jake Eddy pitched out to catcher Nick Jaramillo who charged up the baseline to tag Adams out ten feet from the plate saving a run.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Eddy found his rhythm, fanning all three Wildcat batters to keep the game to a three run deficit.

But in the seventh the odd call bug, that has been haunting the Seahawks all season, showed up again when second baseman Michael Haferman, racing towards the second base bag after an easy on base single by the next Sealth batter, slide into second base and his foot went over the bag in the direction of the West Seattle shortstop. A little known rule called by the infield umpire resulted in a double play for West Seattle. The rule is intended to keep base runners from intentionally spiking a base defender. The call resulted in both base runners being called out without any defensive play being made. While this rule is meant for safety, Haferman didn’t look like he was making an intentional move towards the player covering the bag. His foot simply went over the top of the bag. Whatever the umpire’s intention was, the result was a momentum killing call that took the wind out of the Seahawks, and they fell 7-4.

The Wildcats, who improved their record to 15-4 overall and a 14-2 division record, will advance into the playoffs. They have one more game at home against Bishop Blanchet on Monday.

The Seahawks- who have one more game against Bainbridge Island on Monday at the SWAC- will watch the playoffs from the sidelines, ending a season that many thought would have a different outcome.

SLIDESHOW: Chief Sealth holds on to defeat West Seattle in softball

By Kurt Howard

Chief Sealth International High School hosted cross town rival West Seattle High School in a girl’s fastpitch conference game at the Southwest Athletic Complex on Wednesday, April 24th. The weather was sunny and warm, but there was a wind that didn’t seem to affect the game. This ended up being a great game to watch, no matter which dugout you were supporting.

The first inning was uneventful for both teams, three up and three down. Then, in the top of the 2nd inning, West Seattle got on the board first when Gabby Wenn scored on a hit by Katie DuLong. Chief Sealth would then answer back when Alana Sullivan crossed the plate to tie the game in the bottom of that same inning. In the 3rd inning, Chief Sealth would take the lead when Malia Dewey and Megan Hafermann both scored.

The 4th, 5th and 6th innings were scoreless, but in the top of the 7th thing began to happen. With the score 3-1, in favor of Chief Sealth, West Seattle was up to bat. Chief Sealth’s starting pitcher Chleo Behar was still throwing. First up for West Seattle was Gabby Wenn, who walked. With aggressive base running, Gabby stole second, which put her in scoring position. Teammate Rachel DeVore then had a timely base hit that sent Gabby home from second. As the throw was made to catcher Claire Erickson, Gabby slid in safe at home. With the ball still at Rachel, home stole 2nd, so now she was in scoring position, with the score 2-3.

Chleo Behar then walked her second batter of the inning: this time it was Katie DuLong. Now the tying run was on 2nd and the go ahead run was on 1st, and most important, there still were no outs.

Next up to bat was Sarah DuLong, who struck out - a sigh of relief from Chief Sealth players and fans. Now Hannah Gordon-Kirk was up, she was the fifth batter in the inning. Hannah was at full count when she hit a short pop up and base runner Katie DuLong took off for 2nd. Chief Sealth’s pitcher Chloe Behar caught the ball, turned and threw it to 1st for a double play - game over! Chief Sealth wins a nail biter over West Seattle, 3-2.

After the game I talked with both coaches to get their take on the game - first with West Seattle’s head coach Sylvia Hahn, who is in her 1st year as coach after spending four years at Garfield. “We’re a very young team,” coach Hahn said. “We have only two seniors and they don't even start. We have all freshmen, except three sophomores that start. Our main pitcher is a freshman and our starting outfield is all freshmen who have never played fastpitch ever in their life!” HUH, can you believe it, NEVER played fastpitch before? Wowzers, very impressive to be able to compete at this level!

“They are soccer stars at West Seattle high school but they have never played organized softball. So we started from the bottom up, just teaching base running, and where they need to go with the ball when the plays are being made, backing up and other situations. It's just amazing how much you have to teach someone, but they're doing very well. It is amazing how we compete with other teams that have a lot more experience. Athleticism does help, but there is definitely an intelligence level in softball that exists if you've been playing it for a long time. It's hard to grasp that if you haven't had it and you're just a freshman coming in to learn the first time, that's a big deal. It can be stressful, intimidating, but so much success has happened for these freshman, it's been doing nothing but building upon their confidence by playing.

“Today was the first game they truly came together as a team”, continued coach Hahn. “They realize that no matter where they are put in positions, they are there to be part of the team and do the best at that position no matter what. We have some amazing leaders, not just one, but amazing leaders who are freshmen and sophomores. They know what it takes, and when they're older this team will definitely do something. We have one freshman that’s amazing, Gabby Wenn, that has complete potential to do anything she wants to do. Charli Elliott, who is working really hard to be a better pitcher but she's also good at shortstop, and valuable there. And of course you have Annalisa Ursino (a sophomore) who can play many different positions. In general everybody on this team is working together to be a better team and win. Although we fell short, 3 to 2 is not shabby.”

I also asked 4th year head coach Mike Depew of Chief Sealth what he thought of the game . “We’re happy to get a win against West Seattle whenever we can do it. It's been a long traditional rivalry and it's an important game for our girls. They know the players on the other team and the other team knows our girls very well. They've been playing Little League together, and they socialize together, and they know each other quite well. It puts that much more pressure on them but our girls played good solid ball, good defense and all of our offense looked very solid. We got some timely hits, strung them together and were able to hang on with a double play to end the game. I'm very proud of the girls.”

When commenting on the play that ended the game, coach Depew said, “They had their number nine batter up, we only had one out and they have two runners on base. So at that point it is very important for us to get a double play, which fortunately we were able to do. Those don't happen a lot at this level - it's a long way from being automatic. The girls knew what to do; they made the catch, made the throw and ended the game.

I asked the coach which players stood out today. “Our pitcher, Chloe Behar (a senior), pitched strong through the whole game and really kept their offense on their heels and did a very nice job. Defensively, Delaney Ballard made a lot of plays at second base, she was very solid. Megan Hafermann, our shortstop, was also very solid. They would hit the ball hard at them and they were making their plays and that's what made the difference in a one run game.”

Where does Chief Sealth stand with their class of players? “We have seven senior starters on the team so it’s a good solid group for us. These girls have played together for a long time and have worked hard to get to this level.” With a smile coach Depew said, “We didn't play like this four years ago, that's for sure. We also have a good solid sophomore class on the team. Claire Erickson is a freshman at third base. She came into the program, made the varsity team and has done a super job for us. She’s filled a big hole from a graduating senior last year.”

After watching this competitive game and talking to the coaches, it appears to me that things are looking up for both fastpitch programs.

SLIDESHOW: Wildcats hold off Seahawk rally to win 5-3

With an exciting game tied 3-3 going into the top of the seventh inning a controversial call by the infield umpire at first base changed the momentum of the game in favor of West Seattle.

The Wildcat leadoff hitter blasted a long fly ball into deep left field that began to drift foul but Sealth left fielder Jake Eddy showed great speed and gloved the ball just short of the fence for the first out.

The next play was a controversial one. A seemingly easy out at first base became controversial when the infield umpire said first baseman Aiden Behar pulled his foot off the bag and the umpire called the runner safe. It appeared to everyone that the Wildcat was a full stride short of the bag when the throw was made. That immediately drew the ire of Sealth head coach Ernest Policarpio who went out to challenge the call but the umpire wouldn’t back away from the call. The next pitch was mishandled by catcher Nick Jaramillo and the runner advanced to second base. The next batter #20 Sam Helenger hits an RBI single into left field on a hit and run play driving in a run and the Wildcats have their first lead since the third inning.

AT this time Sealth starting pitcher Marley Lucas, who had been outstanding for the first six and one third innings was pulled because his pitch count went over 100 and Blaine Steele took the mound.

The next batter up #24 Tim Adams singled and the speedy Helenger arrived at third base standing up with one out. Wildcat catcher Jimmy Mai stepped up to the plate and executed a textbook sacrifice bunt up the first base line that forced pitcher Blaine Steele to make the throw to first base for the out but that allowed Helenger to score. Steele would get out of the inning but the damage was done and West Seattle held a 5-3 advantage going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Seahawks rallied in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, runners on second and third, and the go ahead run at the plate, but a simple ground ball ended what would have been a great comeback win for the Seahawks against the west side rival and division leading Wildcats.

These two teams will meet again this Friday at Hiawatha Field for a 3:30 rematch.
