Valentine's flower deliveries are not always rosy

Press release:

Love is in the air and florists are busy filling Valentine’s Day orders, but many consumers have learned the hard way that everything doesn’t always come up roses.

In 2012, florists were among the most complained about service categories on Angie’s List. Most complaints stemmed from the quality of the flowers as well as issues with delivery.

Angie’s List surveyed highly rated florists for advice on placing an order for delivery:

Act now: Don’t wait until the last minute to place your order for flowers. Give the florist plenty of time because Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for any florist.

Buy local: If there is a reputable florist in your area, buy directly from them when you can and think beyond the roses. Your florist can help you find the freshest blooms and find something a little less traditional, too. National companies take your order and pass it along to a local florist to fulfill the order anyway. You’ll have better luck with a correction if something goes wrong.

Include delivery information: The more information you are able to provide about the recipient, the less likely there will be a delivery mishap. Include both home and cell phone numbers and the correct address. If it’s a business, will the delivery person be stopped at the front door? Offer any access information you know about to the delivery driver.

Take advantage of the freshness guarantee: Flowers are a perishable product, and depending on the flower, it will have a life span from 2 to 10 days. If the flowers delivered are not in good condition, call the florist right away (less than 24 hours) so they can correct the problem.

Care for the special delivery: Keep them in a cool place and change water regularly. Cut the stems back about an inch with a knife or gardening clippers every other day as you change the water.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission invites the public to the Arts of India Festival at Saltwater State Park on Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9 at Saltwater State Park, 25205 8th Place South in Des Moines. Celebrate the culture of the Indian subcontinent with performance art, exhibits and more. The festival features dances and songs from across India and instrumental performances by musicians trained in classical, semi-classical and contemporary music. Visitors may explore vendor booths with authentic Indian food, apparel, jewelry and art available for purchase. Admission to the event is free. The Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to the event.

The event is organized by Mera Desh Entertainment. The organization strives to spread Indian culture to the general public and showcase East Indian musicians in the Pacific Northwest. For more information about Arts of India and a full list of event performers, visit www.artsofindiafestival.com.
Arts of Indian is part of a broader series of events celebrating Washington’s diverse cultures and presented in part by the Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program.

The program is a partnership between the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, the Washington State Arts Commission and Northwest Heritage Resources with funding provided by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Washington State Arts Commission, and the Washington State Parks Foundation.

Additional sponsors for the event include 4Culture, KK Market and Saggu Automotive Repair. For a full schedule of Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program events, visit www.parks.wa.gov/events.

Saltwater State Park is a camping park featuring 1,445 feet of saltwater shoreline on Puget Sound, halfway between the cities of Tacoma and Seattle. The two cities jointly and literally buried a hatchet at the park during the 1926 park dedication as a symbol of the end of their mutual competition. The park is a recreational destination nestled in the core of urban living, with forested trails and beach access. Visitors may explore marine life in tide pools at the park and the seasonal spawning of salmon in McSorley Creek. Saltwater State Park is the only state park that features an underwater, artificial reef, providing divers an opportunity to discover the diversity of sea life and marine environments of Puget Sound.
Protect your pets on the Fourth

Fourth of July fireworks are fun for most people but scary for pets. The Humane Society offers these Independence Day pet tips:

Leave them at home-- There are many family and group activities that are perfect for pets, but a public fireworks display or a picnic, cookout or any other type of gathering where fireworks will be set off isn’t one of them – please resist the urge to take your pets to such an event.
Don't leave your pet in the car--
With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects—even death—in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.

Give them shelter--
Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company while you're attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations.

Keep it quiet--
If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays. The HSUS has calming products for sale at its online store, Humane Domain.

Pay attention--
Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.

Tag ‘Em--
Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

Initiative showcase the region’s music culture

Press release

Your next visit to Sea-Tac Airport will come with a free upgrade -- to include the sights and sounds of northwest music. The Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative, Experience the City of Music -- a cooperative effort by the Port of Seattle, Seattle Music Commission and PlayNetwork -- will launch this week to showcase the northwest region’s music culture and enhance the experience of millions of passengers who pass through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport each year.

The Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative, Experience the City of Music is a comprehensive program that enhances the traveler’s experience by utilizing speakers and screens airport-wide to feature a diverse variety of northwest music from the soulful sounds of Quincy Jones to the poignant lyrics of Eddie Vedder.

Travelers will also hear artist-read public announcements, enjoy curated videos on terminal and baggage claim monitors, and listen to a multi-channel web radio player available through the free airport Wi-Fi network.

“The Port is pleased to be a leader in this effort to promote the region’s music industry and to increase the visibility of local musicians at the airport,” said John Creighton, Port of Seattle Commissioner. “From Jimi Hendrix to the Wilson sisters, Chris Cornell and many others, the Seattle area has a strong music heritage.

Over 32 million passengers pass through Sea-Tac Airport each year, giving us a unique opportunity to introduce a new generation of local musicians to travelers and tourists.”

“Seattle is known around the world for its music culture, so it’s great to see this identity embraced and showcased to all the travelers going through the airport,” said Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn. “Jet City, meet Music City."

This campaign will launch dynamic media elements curated and developed by branded entertainment specialist PlayNetwork, including:
• Overhead music featuring local emerging artists like Fences, Beat Connection and Allen Stone with legends like Ray Charles, Heart and Nirvana
• Overhead safety and informational announcements read by local musicians such as Ben Gibbard, LeRoy Bell, Macklemore, Jerry Cantrell and Sir Mix-A-Lot
•Video segments on terminal monitors throughout the airport featuring exceptional original content from KEXP, EMP, MTV, Chase Jarvis, the Seattle Channel’s Art Zone, Light in the Attic Records and The Seattle Band Map
• A web-based multi-channel music player available via the airport’s free WiFi
• An Android mobile app, developed by Front Runner, which will feature access to the PlayNetwork music playlist, videos and KEXP concert listings; iPhone, Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry apps coming soon

Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative Launch Party – Saturday, Jan. 28!

To kick-off and celebrate the Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative, an Experience the City of Music Launch Party will be hosted on January 28, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific Time in Sea-Tac’s Gina Marie Lindsey Arrivals Hall at the south end of the baggage claim area. The event will feature live performances by Seattle artists including:
6 p.m. - Dusty 45’s(upbeat rockabilly, swing and jump blues)
5 p.m. - Fly Moon Royalty(electro-soul duo)
4 p.m. - Carrie Clark & the Lonesome Lovers(roots, Americana, sass-a-frass)
3 p.m. - Recess Monkey(catchy, energetic kids rock)

Additional performances by local musicians will take place onboard Sound Transit's Link light rail trains from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Port of Seattle Commissioner John Creighton and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn will kick off the event alongside Seattle Music Commissioner Marcus Womack. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP now for free.

“We are incredibly proud of our city and it’s an honor to be working on a project that will touch the lives of 80,000 passengers every day,” said Nadine Zgonc, VP of Client Management for PlayNetwork. “From licensing to creative, our team is excited about the work we’re unveiling. It’s been an amazing opportunity to collaborate with such a talented array of community leaders that share our commitment to the region’s artistic culture.”

“This project has been so much fun to work on because of all the community support and excitement to show off our music culture in such a significant way,” said Seattle Music Commissioner Marcus Womack. “I am proud to be on the Seattle Music Commission and drive this forward

.”

Additional support for this project comes from The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.
A little bit of Burning Man coming to Burien Oct. 15

A Northwest nonprofit arts group is promising to turn one block of downtown Burien into a mini Burning Man festival on Oct. 15.

The popular Burning Man festival draws thousands yearly to the California desert. Correction: Burning Man brings thousands to the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, not California.

"We've outgrown every venue in Seattle, and this year we are stuffing two acres of downtown Burien with Fire, Music and Art," a press release from Ignition Northwest proclaims.

"We invite you to come celebrate with two full acres of theme camps, interactive displays, fire spinners, DJs, live music and performers, dance, art cars, grilled cheese, suspension rigs, small blimps, neon rainbows, and every other odd thing we can think of. Imagine one city block of Burning Man being transported - streets and all - to downtown Burien."

The Burien event, dubbed Seacompression, is a 21 and over event because sponsors will have five highly decorated theme bars along with local food vendors.

There will be two different sound stages performing a wide variety of musical acts. The event will have a DJ driven dance hall, with ten different DJs spinning dance tunes though the night. There is also a performance stage with a lineup of fire spinners, musical acts and other performances.

SeaCompression is the annual fundraising festival for Ignition Northwest a non-profit, volunteer driven, 501(c)3 community arts board that funds a variety of annual art and educational programs.

Pre-sale tickets for the Oct. 15 event are $25 and $40.

More information is on the Facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=239540092735597 or on the group's websites at http://seacompresion.org or http://ignitionnw.org/

Attention: For those who have always wanted to be Scut Farkas, Burien Little Theatre holding ‘Christmas Story’ auditions Tuesday

Burien Little Theatre invites actors to audition for staged readings of the holiday comedy "A Christmas Story," written by Philip Grecian. The readings will be performed much like a radio play.

Auditions will consist of cold reading from the script on Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Actors are sought who can play women's roles ranging in age from 9 to 50 and men's roles ranging in age from 9 to 50. Some actors will read multiple roles.

You don't have to be these ages to read the roles, but we prefer actors age 11 and older.

The time commitment is minimal as three to five rehearsals are planned, and there will two performances. The show is directed by Rochelle Flynn.

Synopsis: Humorist Jean Shepherd's very funny memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s. The story follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case to his mother, his teacher and even the Santa Claus at Goldblatt's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out."

All of the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios, and more.

Colorful banners installed along Burien's S.W. 153rd Street

Drive down 153rd Street in downtown Burien and you will see a difference. Colorful new banners have been installed on the light poles from 1st to 10th avenues that will decorate the street for the next year.

The banner project was the brainchild of Burien Arts Commissioner Victoria Hall. Hall, who has lead the education committee of the Arts Commission for many years, wanted to find a way to work with area school children to explore the idea of cultural heritage. Working with three different schools in 2010, she had the students create drawings that explored their diverse cultural heritages.

The drawings were then displayed at the Burien Community Center, and from the many drawings eleven were picked to be made into banners. The arts commission embraced the idea of decorating 153rd Street with the banners and with the help of Discover Burien and local designer Maureen Hoffmann, were then able to have 44 banners printed and installed.

The new banners will be celebrated at Burien Clean Sweep on April 30th with a scavenger hunt for participants and artists.

The City of Burien would like to thank the following teachers and artists: Sylvester Middle School teacher Mycol Winston and student artist Nick Mendoza; Highline High School teacher Lisa Bade and students Losa Berhane, Yohan Lasa, Emma VanAntwerp, Mayra Ramos, and Alyce; and Puget Sound Skills Center teacher Victoria Hall and students Anabella Flores, Cecilia Ramirez, Jackie Disler, Lindsey Hofstadter, and Brandon Wood.

City officials also thanked Debra George and Discover Burien for their support of the project; Burien Public Works for installing the banners; and Victoria Hall, Donna DiFiore, and Maureen Hoffman for their work on the project.

Ghost Light Theatricals brings Kafka's Metamorphosis to the stage

On Friday, Jan 14th, Ghost Light Theatricals will premiere “Metamorphosis”, a play based on the famous short story by Franz Kafka and written and directed by Wilder Nutting-Heath.

“The story isn’t by any means original and it has been done many times. It’s like reading a good book again and again and again,” said director Wilder Nutting-Heath. “Each time it resonates differently with you and that’s why you come back to it.”

In short, Metamorphosis tells the story of Gregor Samsa, a salesman who is the sole provider of his parents and sister. One morning he wakes up to find that he has transformed into a bug overnight. His appearance is horrific and he is no longer able to leave his room and risk being seen. He goes from being the family’s provider to being the burden in need of sister’s care.

Nutthing-Heath said when he first read Kafka’s short story, he was a high school student going through an identity crisis.

“I identified with Gregor Samsa’s struggle with his new body.” he said.

When he read the story again at the start of the current project two years ago he was at a very different stage in his life, Nutting-Heath sai
