UPDATE 3: Principal says Burien 8th grade girl was hit by .22 caliber bullet

March 21 Update: The principal at St. Francis school has informed parents that the 14-year-old student injured on Monday was struck by a .22 caliber bullet.

Our news partner Q-13 Fox had more details:
http://q13fox.com/2013/03/20/14-year-old-burien-girl-shot-while-walking-...

March 20 Update: The 14-year-old Burien girl who was hit with a bullet or pellet while walking home from St. Francis School on Monday has been released from Harborview and is doing well at home.

Police still don't know what struck her. An x-ray is planned to try to determine whether it was a bullet or a pellet.

No suspects have been identified as yet.

Here is our previous coverage:

An 8th grade girl, 14 years old, from St. Francis of Assisi School in Burien was shot and injured in an apparent drive-by shooting near the school today, March 18. She is being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She is reported to be in stable condition.

She was hit by either a pellet or a small-caliber bullet, the King County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Highline Times news partner Q13Fox had more details:

"King County sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindi West said deputies were called to the 16600 block of 21st Ave. SW in Burien at about 3:45 p.m. The victim was walking home with at least one other student when they heard a pop and she felt a pain in her stomach area.

She was initially taken to Highline Hospital and transferred to Harborview Medical Center. She is in good condition, West said.

The kids reported a red car in the area, but deputies have not been able to confirm that the shot came from the car, West said.

A letter was sent out to parents from St. Francis Principal Rosemary Leifer:

“Dear Families,

“Today one of our eighth graders was shot as she and two other students walked home from school. The police reported that an object (a bullet or a pellet) entered the side of her torso. The officer said she was calm and able to talk about what happened. She is in stable condition and on her way to Harborview so that the object can be removed.

“I talked with the girl’s mom and she wanted to make sure that parents knew what happened as soon as possible. The shooting was entirely random. It happened on 21st Ave SW about 10 blocks from school near the student’s home. The boys who were with her said that the shot came from the passenger side of a red car. The police are investigating the incident.

“Until we know more I would encourage you to drive or arrange for your children to be driven to and from school. Please drop-off and pick-up your children in the carpool area. Please do not have your children meet you in front of or across from the school at the minimart on 21st Ave SW. They should stay on the playground.

“Thank you for your help with this. We all want to keep our children safe. I know that your prayers go out with mine for the victim and her family.”

Burien Montessori students help Highline Food Bank with 'can-off'

Press release:

Three Tree Montessori School is a small (143 children ages 1-12) school in South Burien.

Last month a few of our TTMS Elementary students challenged each other to a canned food drive.

Part of the continuous Montessori curriculum is community service. It is our hope that children will leave TTMS with a heartfelt commitment to their neighborhoods and to the world.

This year particularly our students have been discussing the need in our own community. They were shocked to learn that other children, right here in Burien, go each day with little to no food.

TTMS students have volunteered at the “Highline Food Bank” in the past, but this time they wanted to do something that could make a different kind of difference.

The challenge was on! Our upper Elementary (8 students, ages 9-12) and our Lower Elementary (25 students, ages 6-9) decided on a canned food off.

Students had 25 days to collect as many cans as possible. Time was short and the methods were creative. All efforts, as in all things Montessori, were student driven.

On Thursday afternoon the cans were added together. In 25 short days our 33 kids collected 1050 cans. In the scope of world events it’s a little drop in the bucket, but for our 6-9 year olds it was a major victory! Delivery will be made to the Highline Food Bank next Thursday March 22nd.
SeaTac students fast for 24 hours to raise famine funds

By Sidney Lenz
(Editor’s Note: On Nov. 29, the middle school students at Seattle Christian School in SeaTac participated in a 24-hour famine to raise money for famine relief in East Africa.
Sidney Lenz, a seventh-grade student in teacher Matt Althoff’s class, wrote this article about the experience.)

24-hour Famine
Every twelve seconds, a child in the Horn of Africa dies from hunger related causes. Hundreds of children suffer from stunted growth, illness, and lack of energy.

The devastation from hunger affects many in that region of the world from the smallest child to a mother who has to watch her child suffer.

Last week the middle school students at Seattle Christian and I fasted voluntarily for twenty-four hours. We did this to raise awareness of starving people in Africa. We also did this to raise money for them.

About halfway through the day, I felt hungry. The famine was difficult for me, but it made me think more of the kids who feel every day.

The first activity of the famine was a chapel service with a speaker from World Vision. He told us a story of two African girls named Lucianna and Faucia.

Lucianna was hungry for her whole life. Because of that, when she was six she was the size of a three year old. World Vision found her and rushed her to an emergency hunger care center. Before they got to their destination, Lucianna died.

Faucia was also hungry all of her life. She was very thin when World Vision found her. When they did they tended to all her needs immediately.

The funds we raised from the 24-hour famine go to children like Lucianna and Faucia to help prevent more children ending up like Lucianna. I also learned that three million people die of hungry related causes each year.

During the time when we usually had lunch we had a silent reflection time. It gave us time to think about everything that we had learned and even new ways to raise more money.

It made me think more about what was happening in the Horn of Africa and what I could do to help. As I sat there in silence my thankfulness grew for everything that I have.

That last event of the famine was a home basketball game for our boys’ high school varsity team.

During the game we were planning to do a freeze. At the half time buzzer, all the middle school students who were in the gym would freeze in place. We would hold that position for two minutes with the goal of drawing attention to ourselves to get people curious about what we were doing.

When the buzzer went off, everyone who was in on it froze. When we unfroze we handed out small information sheets to people explaining why we did the freeze.

At a donation table we had set up there was a poster we had made that day with 11,000 thumb prints. 11,000 is the number of children under five who die every day from hunger related problems.

We fasted for 24 hours, knowing when we would get to eat again. Children all over the world don’t know when their next meal will come. Children lose their friends, family, and sometimes even their lives from hunger. But these losses are preventable. We can help. My classmates and I collected over $1200 in donations. With that money, World Vision can help make a child’s life better.

Highline students to start laboring before Labor Day

Attention: Those parents who are taking their children on a nice late-summer vacation, ending over the Labor Day weekend.

Highline Public Schools start before Labor Day this year.

Thursday, Sept 1 is the official first day of class in Highline. Traditionally, in Highline, students didn't have to report to class until after Labor Day.
But missing a Labor Day vacation might be a better prospect than foregoing an Independence Day getaway.

Highline schools have never actually finished after the Fourth of July. But some of these past cold winters have had administrators nervously checking the calendar-especially as the snow days pile up like drifts of the white stuff.

Starting school before Labor Day allows the district to avoid the danger of dragging the end of school past June, according to spokeswoman Catherine Carbone Rogers.

Besides, some Highline teachers need to get out of school in mid-June in order to get into college classes during the summer, Rogers added.

Tukwila school kids can relax for a few more days this summer. School doesn't start for them until the day after Labor Day-Tuesday, Sept. 6.

But even though public school students in Highline will be back in the classroom five days before Labor Day, they shouldn't complain too much.

The private school kids at Seattle Christian Schools in SeaTac must report to class on Wednesday, Aug. 31. And John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Burien starts a week before Labor Day-Monday, Aug. 29.

Here's some summer motivation for matriculating through the K-12 system and graduating-Highline Community College students in Des Moines don't start fall classes until Monday, Sept. 26.

Class from Ballard's Holy Angels High School reunites after 50 years

Holy Angels High School's class of 1960 will gather on the weekend of Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 to mark 50 years since graduation.

Holy Angels Academy, founded in 1907 as a coeducational school for first grade through 12th grade, became a high school exclusively for girls in the late 1920s. The grammar school at the location was known as St. Alphonsus School, which still operates at the site.

In 1923, Holy Angels Academy was the largest Catholic school in the state, enrolling more than 600 students, necessitating the construction of the red brick school building still in use.

Due to declining enrollment and financial concerns, Holy Angels High School, which occupied the third floor of the existing St. Alphonsus School building, closed its doors permanently in 1972.

While the majority of alumni still reside in Washington, others live in California, Montana, Oregon, Wisconsin and Manitoba, Canada. When they meet at the home of Sondra (Haney) Wagener Sept. 11, it will be, for many, their first encounter since their May 29, 1960 graduation.

"We are quite excited to be getting together after more than 50 years," said class of 1960 member Peggy Broderick. "Many of us have kept in touch with one another and rekindled old friendships and made new friends."

The reunion committee hopes to reunite as many of the class' 40 graduates as possible.

SLIDESHOW: Westside School is happy about the light on learning

Move complete; a ribbon cutting is set for Sep. 7

Westside School is in their new home at 7740 34th S.W. in the E.C. Hughes building and they couldn't be happier. The school is a beehive of activity with teachers, and parent volunteers all preparing for the coming school year.

CLICK ON THE IMAGE ABOVE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS

Jo Ann Yockey, Head of the School, took the West Seattle Herald on an exclusive tour of the new home for Westside and pointed out the surprising and delightful aspects they discovered when they moved in.

"I'm in heaven," said Yockey, referring to the much larger space the school now has, "and we've filled up the building and so it's great. To see it come together, cleaning it up, you don't know when you are getting an old building but it's all wired for the internet, the security is fantastic."

Everyone agrees that the best thing about the school is the light that streams in through the large multi pane windows found everywhere in building originally constructed in 1913. "Our classrooms are full of light with huge windows we have gorgeous views. We're going to study the Cascade Mountains because we're looking at the Cascade Mountains," said Margie Carpenter a first grade teacher at the school. "This is the highest part of West Seattle," added Yockey referring to the elevation which according to SDOT is 6 parcels south of the watertower at 35th Ave SW and SW Myrtle Street at 520 feet above sea level. Renee Smith, another teacher said, "We're an exhausted first grade team. We've been unpacking and figuring out how best to use the new space."

Westside offers classes from preschool through fifth grade.

The school formed a steering committee to accomplish the move that organized the effort. While the Seattle School District agreed to paint the exterior windows, the inside clean up and paint had to be done by the new tenants. The effort also covered two covered play areas outside that Yockey explained were built as separate boys and girls play areas in 1926. Today they will be used for pre-school students and older children when the weather is inclement. The team had a big list to finish including cleaning, waxing and buffing the floors, installing new office carpets, re-lamping all the fixtures, replacing a damaged handrail, replacing damaged ceiling tile and getting rid of all the weeds on the surrounding grounds. They also enlarged the driveway for the south parking lot.

The playground was repaved with new asphalt on Thursday, Aug 19 and there's plan to later tear some of it up to install a grass field, but that's on the wish list. The existing playsets were moved to the new site, "since they were only three years old and they add a touchstone for returning students," said Director of Admissions David Bergler. There are wood chips around the equipment and a curb is being added. As part of any lease with the Seattle School District they must leave the school grounds open after hours and on weekends so neighborhood children can access it as well.

Yockey was delighted to find that the school already had a motorized chair lift for the handicapped to access the gymnasium. The floor of the gym had some damage and is being repaired. She pointed out that the auditorium has a kitchen, though the school will not provide a lunch service. Instead they recommend a service called Blueplate Express that brings hot lunches into the school ordered by the parents. The auditorium had another surprise in the form of a projection booth. The fully insulated and metal walled room was built when films were shown for education or entertainment purposes. They don't know what they will do with the space but are considering ideas.

The school will have its grand opening on September 7th with a ribbon cutting. "Traditionally we open the Wednesday after Labor Day and the day before at 4 o'clock the children come to see their classroom," said Yockey, "So this year we're making it a ribbon cutting and we're going to have a kind of back to school picnic supper for everybody with just some simple food, not a potluck."

Director of Admissions David Bergler said, "I love how kids learn here. They roll their sleeves up and get involved in their learning. There's a lot of experiential learning. A lot of cooperative work. They understand how to accept the opinions of others and appreciate the strengths of others and work towards a common goal.
