The city administration's proposal to increase some Interbay height limits from 40 feet to 85 feet has been approved by the council's Planning, Land Use and Neighborhoods Committee.

Because it in an area-wide rezoning change, it requires a change in the city municipal code.

The change requires 11percent of developments in the area to include affordable workforce housing.

The mayor's proposal would have been permitted seven to 10 units but Clark proposed 20 percent of developments should be required to be affordable to people making 80 percent of the area's medi

After Mayor Greg Nickels proposed new regulations for townhouses, some believe the process could become even more prolonged and costly.

But a group of architects now hopes to share the importance of multi-family housing and its new flexible zoning.

The city design review process hopes to encourage more tasteful townhomes that will blend in rather than stick out like sore thumbs in mixed housing communities.

The Burien Planning Commission meeting room was packed Sept. 23 as residents of Lake Burien came to protest the proposed rezoning of two portions of the Ruth Dykeman Children's Center property.

The children's center, which is currently designated as one of five special planning areas, petitioned the city to rezone approximately two acres of its property for potential residential development.

Nearly an acre of land bordering 10th Avenue South and Saint Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, if approved, would be designated high density.

The proposed design for the new 58,000-square-foot Admiral Safeway store, which will also include residential units in the development, was presented last week at the Hiawatha Community Center.

Nearly 30 people listened as representatives from Fuller Sears Architects, the firm retained for the project, Steve Johnson and Bill Fuller, presented with Safeway representative Sara Corn.

The Seattle Department of Transportation is conducting a review of the Residential Parking Zone program in Seattle.

The program is designed to help residents who live in congested areas by discouraging long-term parking of non-residents on residential streets.

Staff is looking at all aspects of the program, including program goals, permit issuance, zone creation, and enforcement practices.

The Seattle City Council is expected to receive legislation from Mayor Greg Nickels this week that could assign developers the responsibility of providing affordable housing if they chose to build higher than existing zoning allows.

The policy is known as incentive zoning, and it was first implemented in Downtown Seattle in 2006. That year, much of the area was rezoned, allowing for greater building height.
