Volunteers are urgently needed to advocate on behalf of vulnerable adults living in long-term care facilities in the Burien, Tukwila, Des Moines and SeaTac communities.

These volunteers work to ensure the dignity, civil rights, and well-being of elderly and disabled adults living in Nursing Homes, Boarding Homes, and Adult Family Homes. The four-day Washington State Certification Training for new volunteers is Nov 13, 26, 27, 29, 8 a.m.-5pm daily.
As a volunteer ombudsman, you'll join approximately 400 other ombudsmen across the State of Washington making regular visits to long-term care facilities to meet with residents and their families, providing information on resident rights and working to resolve problems on behalf of residents. Ombudsman services are completely free.

Volunteers must attend the initial training to get state certified, and then must devote 4 hours/week to visit and monitor assigned facilities. Ongoing training is provided as needed.

Brat Trot Team Pub Crawl:
It's a new take on the old Pub Crawl

Individuals register (online at www.burienbrattrot.com), then form teams of 2 or more. Check in with your team at the Tin Theater between 6 and 7 pm on Friday, October 5th. We'll get you going on a team scavenger hunt of sorts-to local pubs and other nearby B-town businesses!

Community Animal Resource Education Society of Burien (CARES ) received official notice from the IRS on Sept. 10 that its application for 501 (c) 3 status was approved, retroactive to May 1, 2011, when the animal control organization began operations.

This 501 (c) 3 status allows past and future donors to CARES to deduct their contributions from their federal income tax. The designation also provides more opportunities for CARES to apply for and obtain government grants.

Further, CARES is now exempt from paying sales tax on its purchases of pet food and other supplies.
CARES director Debra George said she was elated after receiving the letter from the IRS. “This is an important document for us,” she said. “it allows us to continue to move forward in a positive direction.”

UPDATE: Sept. 15, 6:30 p.m.

The 7-state American Lung Association of the Mountain Pacific Region held its fundraiser. “Ride Around the Sound” Saturday, Sept. 15. Over 200 registered riders pedaled 100 miles from South Seattle Community College, or 75 from Marvista School in Des Moines. The organization helps keep kids from picking up that first cigarette, helps families dealing with lung cancer & asthma, and advocates for clean air. This is ride's the 30th year, but the first with this route. It was in the San Juan Islands in the past.

Over 200 cyclists will take part in the inaugural “Ride Around the Sound” bike ride on September 15th. A benefit for the American Lung Association in Washington, the ride features five distance options around Puget Sound, ranging from 100 miles to a family-friendly ride of under 15 miles in West Seattle. Local school Marvista Elementary will serve as the 75-mile starting location.

Burien streets that will be on the route are: 16th Ave SW; SW 107 St; 10th Ave SW; SW 116th St; 4th Ave SW; SW 152nd St; Maplewild Ave SW; SW 172nd St; and Sylvester Rd SW.

UPDATE:

Donors, partners and supporters of Community Schools Collaboration (CSC) held a Block Party Fundraiser Sept. 7 to support students in South King County. Guests sponsored backpacks for a CSC students, bid in a silent auction, had a meal and drinks, and enjoy live music. CSC supports students in Highline and Tukwila school districts. The CSC Office is at 137 SW 154th St. in Burien.

Community Schools Collaboration provides over 3,000 students annually with academic support, access to health programs, family engagement and youth development opportunities.

Highline Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield participated, and told the Highline Times, "This is one of our greatest community partners. What they allow us to do for kids in our schools we could never do alone and we are grateful. In this day and age every nonprofit is struggling. The more people can do to support organizations like this, the better off our kids are, and their families."

Smith plans to give a Congressional update and will focus on the debt and deficit situation that is so severely impacting our economy. Audience members are encouraged to bring questions and provide comments about federal issues you want to share your opinion on and ask him to prioritize.

Navos Mental Health Solutions announced it received a King County grant to create a community-based coalition for drug free youth in the Burien/White Center communities and has appointed communications veteran Rudy Garza as Coalition Coordinator.

Navos has been responding to the needs of people with mental illness in King County for over 40-years. Its services are targeted to those who live at or near poverty, often as a result of their mental illness. The mission of Navos is to improve the quality of life of people vulnerable to mental illness by providing a broad continuum of care.
“As part of the work we do with youth, we saw a need to address the substance abuse-related issues among youth in the Burien/White Center community said Joan Zintak, Director of Adult Services.” This five-year grant allows us to collaborate with other agencies, the private and public sector, and the community at-large to better address these issues by providing alternatives,” she added.

The relationship will be as a supportive partner, not as the lead or organizer of the event. The partners will be selected by the Board of Directors for the next calendar year.

The Burien Eagles have been various generous in their donations to Hospitality House, the Burien shelter for homeless shelter for single women.

The total donation to Hospitality House was $2,796.

The donation was made in two ways; first the Burien Eagles purchased a full-size washer and dryer as the old smaller units were failing. The balance a check presented at a recent ceremony at the Burien Eagles’ club to Hospitably House Board member Priscilla Stephensen by Jim Tobolski, Val Rufner, Tim and Charlene Farnam of the Burien Eagles

The Eagles raised the funds by selling sliders on Thursday nights and the proceeds of a few Sunday breakfasts.

The YMCA of Greater Seattle received a $65,000 grant Monday, June 25 from the Community Transformation Grants Program (CTGs) to lead efforts in South King County to ensure more healthy opportunities are available to all residents, with a specific focus on increased access to African Americans and Hispanics.

The grants are part of the Community Transformation Grants program (CTGs) – a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiative to support public health efforts to reduce chronic diseases, promote healthier lifestyles, reduce health disparities and lower health care costs.

YMCA of the USA (Y-USA), the national resource office for the nation’s 2,700 YMCAs and one of seven national organizations to receive funding through CTGs, is re-granting the funds to 10 local Ys to deepen their efforts to implement programs and strategies that support the health and well-being of individuals in their communities.
