The first-ever Obliteride will soon spin through Des Moines. Routes for the 25-, 50-, 100- and 180-mile rides have just been released. They offer various distances and terrains so all levels of riders can participate and make their marks against cancer.
Obliteride is a fundraising bike ride to benefit lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch. It features an entire weekend of cycling, celebration and concerts Aug. 9-11.
“Obliteride is a community-wide event that everyone can participate in by riding, volunteering or cheering on participants as they roll though your community,” said Amy Lavin, Obliteride’s executive director. “We would love to see people get involved by volunteering or lining the streets with signs honoring loved ones or friends who have battled cancer or are in the fight today. Simply come to the end of your driveway and cheer on the riders. We’d love to see everyone out there!”
The Highline Historical Society is pleased to announce that it will showcase the work of four outstanding Highline-area quilt artists for two weeks at the end of March.
“A Sense of Place: In My Garden, Under the Sea – Four Highline Quilt Artists” will feature the work of Marie O’Kelley, Carla Stehr, Sonia Grasvik and Linda Johanson.
It will be available for viewing from March 18-29 at the Burien Community Center (14700 6th Avenue SW, Burien) during that facility’s regular open hours. Admission is free.
The exhibit will be curated by Lloyd Herman, a Highline Historical Society board trustee and Director Emeritus of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and by Highline Historical Society curator Nancy Salguero McKay.
The Historical Society seeks a few more volunteers to staff an exhibit information table in 4-hour shifts (3 shifts/day on Monday through Thursday, and 2 shifts on Fridays).
Experienced educational leader Jessica de Barros has been selected as the Project Director for the Road Map Consortium District Race to the Top grant. de Barros will start March 25 and report directly to the recently established Executive Committee.
As project director, de Barros and the Executive Committee will be responsible for the implementation of the four-year, $40 million federal grant for the Road Map region of Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton, Seattle and Tukwila school districts.
De Barros returns to Pacific Northwest region after spending the last two years serving as the Director of Impact for the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. In her role with the partnership, she designed and implemented a system to achieve aggressive goals across a turnaround network of 22 schools and 40 home office employees.
From 2008 -2011, de Barros served Seattle Public Schools as the Manager of Academic Planning & School Improvement as well as a project director.

The 8th Annual Burien Empty Bowls was a great success! A huge thank you to the Burien community for joining us for a meal and helping raise $16,762 for the Highline and White Center Food Banks! Over 930 people came to the event on Friday, Jan 25th.
This annual fundraiser, always on the last Friday in January, is a great opportunity to support the food banks and have a meal with your neighbors! All the food is donated by local businesses, and all the bowls are made and donated by potters at the Moshier Community Art Center…and even past potters from as far away as Chicago! The event is hosted by Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services and Discover Burien.

Twice a year the potters at the Moshier Art Center sell their handmade wares.
Luckily for discriminating holiday shoppers, one of those times is this Saturday, Dec. 1. The potters will be selling their wares at the art center, located at 430 S. 156th St., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Hundreds of items such as mugs, bowls, serving dishes, casseroles, garden art, jewelry and planters will be for sale.

It’s the time of the year when we pause to give thanks. BLT has much to give thanks for. I have volunteered at BLT for over seven years. I have seen the theater grow, both in quality and stature. I have seen it go from people looking surprised and asking, “Burien has a live theater?” to people coming up to me in a store asking, “What is playing now at the theater?”
BLT has been blessed with wonderful donors who are making better live theater possible. BLT donors give in every amount from $1 to $5,000. Every donor is amazing, and every donation deeply appreciated.
BLT could not operate without the hundreds of hours of volunteer time put in by BLT’s fantastic volunteers. BLT is all volunteer. Because of their generous help, BLT is doing some of the best theater in the county.
BLT is most blessed by a great audience. Theater is no fun to do for yourself and a hand full of your friends. BLT’s audience comes from Vancouver, B.C. to Portland, Oregon and everywhere in between. Most come from within 20 miles of the theater, but others drive for hours just to join in the fun here at BLT.
An Evening of Jazz and Friends, a fund-raising event benefiting the Global Connections High School Wind Ensemble, was a sell-out success! Generous individuals, businesses, and community organizations contributed more than $27,000 to send the Wind Ensemble to Washington, D.C., to play at the Presidential Inauguration Music Festival. The school, where nearly 80 percent of the student body qualifies for free- or reduced-price lunch, needs $60,000 to pay for travel and accommodation for the band members.
The success of this event was made possible by many community members and organizations. “Our community extended its generosity to these students in a way that I have seldom witnessed,” said Superintendent Susan Enfield. “I thank each and every individual, business and organization for their tremendous support. They demonstrated how very deeply our community cares about its students, as well as the power of community collaboration.”
The Environmental Science Center (ESC) would like to invite the public to join us for this free ONCE A YEAR event at the Environmental Science Center at Seahurst Park. An After-Hours Beach Walk will take place Friday, December 14th, 2012 from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM.
An especially low tide combined with the protective darkness of night will give you the opportunity to see marine animals in a new light- your FLASHLIGHT! Naturalists will be taking groups from the Environmental Science Center down to the beach to guide the experience and identify discoveries. Inside the center, you can learn more about marine life at the microscope station or join a game of marine bingo. Warm up with cider and cookies while socializing with fellow Puget Sound enthusiasts.
