The possible annexation of White Center and Boulevard Park to either Burien or Seattle continues to gurgle through the innards of each city's respective governments, but now SeaTac wants a bite.

The SeaTac City Council voted Nov. 26 to declare a portion of North Highline near SeaTac as a "potential annexation area." The neighborhood in question is between Des Moines Memorial Drive and the Tukwila city limits around Hilltop Elementary School and Hilltop Park.

Urban Partners announced last week that it is moving forward with the full architectural design of Burien Town Square Phase II.

The next step in the development of Town Square in downtown Burien follows what Urban Partners described as "the success of Burien Town Square Phase I."

The firm noted in a news release that "nearly one-third of available condominium homes [have been] sold a full year before scheduled completion."

Urban Partners is set to begin construction of Phase II in fall of 2008.

Memories of home updated

By John Oliver

Thomas Wolfe wrote You Can't Go Home Again, but I don't agree with him. You can and can't return. I grew up in Ballard and recently returned after a long absence. What I found was a delicious mixture of then and now. Memories updated.

I searched for the home where I was born. What better place to start but at the beginning? But I couldn't find the house or the exact location. Somebody pointed out a place they thought it might be, but that was wrong.

The Northwest Design Review Board has approved the design of a new six-story, 31-unit condominium for the northwest corner of 24th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 58th Street. Danielle Condominium is the newest addition planned in a two-block radius on busy 24th where several multi-level residential buildings have sprouted in the past few years, with more to come.

Across the street to the southeast, the QFC grocery story will be rebuilt below six levels of apartment units.

At Large in Ballard by Peggy Studivant

Let me count the ways that I love the new Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library. At least half of the year, when our days are short, nighttime events held in the community meeting room create an outside glow as though the top of the Space Needle had landed on Northwest 22nd.

A small bookstore like Secret Garden Bookshop has found the formula for competing with the chain stores by bringing authors in to read.

"One of the things we do is have programming for our community," said Events Coordinator Suzanne Perry.

The free readings began in November 2005 after the new library opened. Since then the readings and the audiences have grown.

"It's lovely to have that space. Patrons come just for the series. We never have less than 25 people. It's really amazing," said Perry.

The local Ballard schools are not left out.

Ballard Library - heart of community

By Kay F. Reinartz

When I was in the Ballard Library last week I noticed that there were more Ballardites than a few weeks earlier sitting around the tables happily hunched over books and magazines. In the book stacks along the walls others, many of them elementary and high school students, hunted for specific titles.
