Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28. Come join us for literally tons of rock, gem and mineral-related exhibits and hands-on fun. There will be plenty of activities for kids and juniors. A silent auction - one for kids and one for adults. Spin our giant wheel for prizes. We’ll have rock displays, minerals, fossils, geodes, gemstones and crystals to explore.

Club members will have their own display cases on exhibit. Demonstrations of jewelry and lapidary techniques. Dealers selling: minerals, lapidary tools, fossils, geodes and more! Food and drinks available. Free admission.

SWS March forum: Successful Gardening with Nature

The first of a series of three forums on the topic of gardening, this session will focus on soil building. Experts from SWS will share their secrets to the foundation of successful gardening. The hands-on style of learning will demonstrate the process of creating garden beds that sustain fertilizer and water as well as keep the weeds at bay. This is followed by a Q&A and the movie “Permaculture Soils” by Geoff Lawton in a classroom. Several workshops at the Community Orchard will follow in coming days (see below).

Green grant winner to be announced
Also, the winner of the $1,000 Green Incubator Grant will be announced at this meeting. SWS received six applications for the grant, made possible by a generous grant from the Coho Team at Windermere Agents. Applicants presented their ideas at the February meeting and the public has been invited to vote on the best idea according to the following criteria: Feasibility, Sustainability, Social and Economic Justice, Community Building, and Educational Elements. The ideas include building membership for the Delridge Produce Cooperative; two bicycle work stations for the West Seattle Tool Library; an educational website about invasive seeds; establishing a West Seattle Timebank for people to exchange services; educational kiosks for the West Duwamish Greenbelt; and clean-up for a White Center site to be developed into a community garden/orchard.

It’s also a great time to show off what you’ve been working on.

Learn the beading basics to create a one-of-a-kind necklace plus earrings. Acquire the fundamentals of beading, including bead selection, designing, stringing, tools, supplies and techniques for finishing your first necklace and earrings. This is a great class to get you started in beading!

Students are also encouraged to bring their own beads or other materials they'd like to string. If you have these jewelry tools, please bring them to class - flush cutter (small pair of wire cutters) round nose plier, chain nose plier, bent nose plier.

Materials provided: A variety of beads, Beadalon (or other similar product) which is a multiple wire, plastic coated wire strand for stringing your necklace, crimp beads, wire for necklace clasp and to make earwires.
